HANOI – Hundreds of Vietnamese have held a ceremony to bury a dead whale found off the coast, believing it will bring luck to local fishermen, an official said Monday.

A fishing crew on Saturday found the corpse of the seven-tonne mammal about 100 kilometres (60 miles) off south-central Vietnam and towed it to shore, said Nguyen Tien Thanh, a government official in Ninh Thuan province‘s Dong Hai district.

“We don’t know where the corpse came from,” Thanh said. “We organised a day-long ceremony on Sunday to bury it.”

About 100 fishermen were among the crowd of 300 who paid their respects to the 10-metre long (33-foot) animal.

“According to the custom of local fishermen, burying the cadavers of dead whales will bring them luck when they go to sea. It’s a longstanding tradition of fishermen here,” Thanh said, despite whales not being native to Vietnamese waters.

He added that after three years the remains of the animal would be exhumed from their seaside burial spot for re-interment at a local whale cemetery.

Could the whale have beached itself because there are US military ships off the coast of Vietnam at the moment. I watched a documentary which explained how some military ships use very powerful sonar which cause pain and injury to whales hearing system, so they try to escape by beaching themselves. Is this true? I dont know. Research it for yourself :)

Lot’s of controversy on the Navy testing, there are a number of stories here of whale and dolphins being possible harmed by this sonar, it has been in the news for a number of years with outcry to the possible affects on these and other sea life !
