A five-meter-long whale was found dead Friday at northern water area in Changyi City, east China’s Shandong Province.
“When I found the huge dead fish, I call the border police station immediately,” said Li Tao, a fisherman who found the dead whale.
The dead whale was found lying on its back with its fin inserted in the sand, a large area of skin in its abdomen peeling. A number of injuries could be seen all over its body and its mouth was filled with rotting flesh.
According to a preliminary identification by professionals, the two-year-old animal is a baleen whale, weighing over two tons, more than five meters long. This is an animal listed under second-level state protection in China.
It is estimated that the whale died two days ago.
“It’s likely the wounds of the whale were caused by the propeller of a large cargo ship,” said Liu Yuhong, staff of the Oceanic and Fishery Administration of Changyi city.
Whales are rarely seen in the Laizhou Bay waters, so the dead whale will be made into a specimen or receive biosafety disposal.
