Sperm whale found dead on Garut beach, Indonesia

A 15-meter sperm whale was found dead, beached at Karang Kukus in Santolo, Garut, West Java on Wednesday at around 4:30 a.m.

The local fishermen who found the mammal suspected it was looking for warmer water temperature or food when it became stranded on the beach.

Local residents swarmed onto the beach to see the whale’s carcass.

According to Teguh Setiawan, a local member of staff from the Natural Resource Conservation Agency, they had yet to determine whether to bury the carcass or throw it back to sea.

“We have to check its condition first before making any decision,” he said as quoted by tempo.co. He added that some staff would check the whale’s carcass later today. (iwa)
