30,000 Sheep die in Uruguay, incessant rains thought to be responsible

The north region of the country -Artigas, Paysandu, Salto and Tacuarembo- suffered the worst consequences from the rains, with losses estimated in the range of 30.000 wool heads; serious damage to homes, roads and farms that affected other areas of the country.

(CRN-SEP-30-2013) CRNEWS- This report in Spanish from Uruguay says that the incessant rains that pelted the region for 25 straight days killed an estimated 30,000 sheep and cattle. The event will affect the export of wool and lamb worldwide.
Ranchers reported that they have never seen anything like this ever. Not even their father nor grandparents before them. This is unprecedented. The headline reads, Nothing like this has ever been seen at the countryside.” while a macabre display of dead animals can be seen for miles and miles.
Citizens were told to not eat the meat of the animals pending their recollection and incineration.
The question remains, what killed the tens of thousands of sheep? Rainwater or something even worse? Could a biological weapon have been released as a beta test for something else? Whatever it is, it is not good, considering that the massive die offs of animals around the world, mainly fish, birds and poultry, and bees, is off the charts.
