Tolerance Vs. Acceptance

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Tolerance is word I have truly come to disassociate with. Tolerance essentially means “to put up with.” We assert this to race, religion, social status etc. We believe we are accepting people by just “tolerating” or “putting up” with people, culture and behavior’s that pull on our prejudices.

What we have to ask ourselves is are we truly letting go of our prejudices when we practice tolerance? Are we not just sweeping them under the rug – not face the mess head on?

Tolerance is a term usually associated with race, but in this context I am going beyond that. Yes, accept a different race or culture, if you cannot – then your prejudices are too deep rooted, but don’t tolerate it. You are lying to yourself and to those people you interact with.

Tolerance goes beyond race, into social status, class, friendships etc. Are you just “putting up with him/her because they are the only people in your lives? You may not be able to stand their little quirks, hence you just tolerate it.

It’s this preaching of tolerance that leads to major inner frustrations later on in life. All those pent up emotions come raging out, you express what you truly feel, and at this point there is no going back, no way to salvage the relationship, the friendship.

Practice acceptance. True acceptance. If a person acts a certain way or heeds to a certain belief accept its their right to do so. Don’t just put up with it and criticize such behavior’s when they are not looking. If you truly cannot accept, then be true to yourselves.

Don’t sweep your prejudices under the rug, face them head on and see if you can change such deep rooted belief patters. The last thing you want to do is lie to yourself.
