Winter Solstice – Celebrate the Arrival of Light!

 The Winter Stall…..

Today is the Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.  

Even though the Solstice begins the Winter Season, it also signals the return
of the light of the sun. Because it promises the return of the Light, the
Solstice has been a reason to celebrate since ancient times.

The word solstice comes from the Latin words “sun” (“sol”) and (“sistere”)
“to cause to stand still“  due to the fact that the Sun seems to stop in the
sky.

On Winter Solstice, the Sun is directly overhead at “high-noon” at the
latitude Tropic of Capricorn. In the Northern Hemisphere, these solstice days
are the days with the fewest hours of sunlight during the whole year.

The Winter Solstice (December solstice in the Northern Hemisphere) has
influenced mankind through the ages in art, mythology, religion and literature.

Some suggest that the Christian celebration of Christ’s birth at this time of year is based upon a foundation of earlier pagan or nature-oriented rituals that marked the beginning of winter.

There is archaeological evidence that ancient Europeans, peoples of South America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East all had sacred sites linked to the solstices and equinoxes. Included in these sites are tombs, temples, rock cairns, caves and observatories.

Winter is also a time for hibernation of the Soul. A time to return to the Light. To replenish the light within.
