How to Cleanse Your Crystals

‘Cleansing’ Your Crystals

Once you have physically cleaned your crystals, (for most crystals, tepid water and a soft brush) it is wise to ‘cleanse’ any new crystals or gemstones that come into your possession.

This will clear them of any unwanted vibrations or energies that they may have acquired along the way on their journey to you. If you use your crystals as healing tools, it is best to cleanse them before and after each healing session.

There are several crystals that are self-cleansing, such as Citrine, Kyanite and Azeztulite.

Some crystals are used to cleanse others, such as Carnelian and Clear Quartz. It is recommended to cleanse the ‘cleansing stones’ afterward.

There are many ways to cleanse a crystal. Choose a method you feel comfortable with and makes sense to you. Experiment and see what is more effective for you.

The cleansing method itself is less important than the focused Intention behind the cleansing.

 Visualize the crystal releasing all impurities and negativities – imagine these energies rejoining with the Universal Energy, and being re-cycled into positive energy.

Water Cleansing

Water running over the crystal will purify it, and restore it to its maximum vibration. 

Rain is a wonderful way to wash and cleanse your stones, as is a natural, running stream of water such as a river, stream or waterfall. Tap water works as well.

 A bath of spring water is also effective. Use a plastic bowl, as glass or glazed pottery may chip your   crystals. Fill the vessel to cover the stones by 1 inch of water (room temperature). You may also use distilled water for energies that are more refined. Keep overnight, or however long your intuition may guide you.

When pouring off the water, be careful not to spill any on yourself, as it may transfer any impurities back to you.

Some folks like to bathe their crystals in sea salt water. I have never been a devotee of this method. Even though salt is a natural cleanser, it is abrasive and can be damaging to a crystal’s surface. Some crystals, such as Angelite, pearls and certain marbles, are sensitive to salt, and may be damaged if bathed in salt water.

You may wish to try resting the crystals in a dish of dry salt instead. After cleansing, be sure to wipe off and throw away the salt and impurities. Use the salt only once, as it may retain impressions  from past stones.

Earth Cleansing

You can bury your crystals in the ground to re-balance their energy, allowing them to be in harmonious vibration with the Earth. Bringing your crystals to a sacred space, or a place of great natural beauty, will be rewarding to both you and your crystals.

Air Cleansing

You can smudge your crystals, using the powers of wind and smoke to effectively cleanse them. Light white sage, sweetgrass or incense such as frankincense. Fan the smoke gently over the stones with a feather fan. This is especially effective for cleansing delicate crystals that cannot be immersed in water.

Use crystals to clean other crystals. Place your crystal on a ‘naturally-cleansing’ stone cluster, such as clear quartz or citrine.

Fire Cleansing

Wave your crystals quickly through a candle flame. This will quickly and thoroughly clean them.

Be careful not to get carbon marks on your stones.

Sun or Moon Cleansing

Leave your stones outside for a full cycle in Sunlight or Moonlight. Be advised not to leave crystals in the sunlight for a prolonged period of time. It may fade brightly colored stones. Dawn or Sunset cleansing is powerful.

Leave your crystals overnight in the moonlight – especially the full Moon or any significant Lunar event, such as an eclipse.

Sonic Cleansing

Use a singing bowl or a tuning fork to re-balance the crystal’s vibrations back to its natural resonance.

White Light

Visualize the crystals surrounded by while light, which will purify and energize them. Use Reiki energy and symbols to clear your crystals.
