MAY DAY | The 1st of May

From the Metaphysical Almanac

MAY DAY

Today, the 1st of May.

The 1st day of May is known as “May Day”.  It’s an ancient Northern Hemisphere spring festival as well as a traditional Spring celebration in many cultures.

People all over the world celebrate the joy and the hope that follows the long gloomy winter .

The Month of May is named after the Goddess Maia, “the Maker”, Goddess of Spring and Rebirth – the wife of Mars, mother of Mercury. It is traditionally known as a time of love and romance – blooming like the flowers and the trees.

The May Day festivals marked the end of the long winter, and welcomed the beginning of the more optimistic and productive months of Summer.

Early May Day celebrations are said to have occurred in pre-Christian European pagan cultures, when people would celebrate the coming of Spring with a whole day of festival and dancing – dedicated to Flora, the Goddess of Blossoms and Flowers and youthful pleasures, a celebration of Nature in full bloom. It is also associated with the Gaelic Beltane.

To Roman Catholics, May is observed as Mary’s month, with a celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Roman Catholic schoolchildren sing this centuries-old song:

“Mary, we crown you with blossoms today,

 Queen of the Angels,

And Queen of the May”

May Day Traditions

It was traditional for everyone to go a-Maying very early on May Day.

In the distant past, celebration of May Day began at dawn.

Summer was heralded by young men blowing cow horns.

Folks would gather flowers and greenery before sunrise and decorate their houses and the Maypole.  They believed the Spirits of the vegetation would bring them good fortune.

They would also make May garlands with leaves and flowers, sometimes putting a doll inside to represent the Goddess of Spring. May 1st is known as Garland Day in some parts of Great Britain.

Young girls would wash their faces in the morning dew, as old tales say that May dew has a magical property – and anyone who washed their face in it would have a lovely complexion all the year.

And just about every village in England had a maypole.

The May Day Maypole

The meaning behind the Maypole originates back to ancient rites of spring fertility in India and Egypt. Originally, the Maypole represented a phallic symbol or a Pagan symbol of Fertility – celebrating life and sexuality.

The Maypole was decorated with streamers and flowers. Dancers held the streamers and circled the pole – weaving a pattern in and out as they passed one another in the dance. The pole represents the masculine principle, and the wreath represents the feminine principle.

The ancient Britons had been erecting Maypoles long before the Roman invasion in 43 AD. There were also Norse and other versions. Later the maypole became associated with the Romans and their worship of the Goddess Maia.

Even today, throughout England and most of the UK, traditional English May Day rites and celebrations include traditions such as Morris dancing, crowning the May Queen, and dancing around the Maypole.

Not so much enthusiasm or celebration of this holiday in the United States, (except for Hawaii, where May Day is celebrated with the tradition of Lei-giving, originally a sign of peace between two tribes)

It seems that the founding fathers of the Puritans frowned upon May Day. (Back in merry olde England, the Puritans forbid maypoles  - through an official Act of Parliament in 1664)

On another note…

May Day is designated International Workers’ Day. It is an international holiday in many countries, but not celebrated in USA or UK.

Although May is a time of celebration, keep in mind some superstitions:

May is not considered a fortunate month to marry

“Marry in May, rue the day”

Or, apparently, to buy a broom or wash blankets.

“Wash a blanket in May, wash a dear one away”

Happy 1st of May Day!

LOL. The spring fertility godess of the north was called Ostara. It has nothing to do with the Greek Goddess Maia. The northern Europen month names were changed during the Roman occupation. They are not connected.
