Does Anti-Clutter = Good Feng Shui?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

In Feng Shui, clutter is usually seen as a problem because it causes energy to stagnate which can then reflect in our lives. But what about the opposite? Does clean, tidy and nothing out of place mean good Feng Shui? Not necessarily.

There’s a TV programme here in the UK called Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners. The format of the show is to match somebody who is obsessive about cleaning their house with somebody else who, for a number of different reasons, has fallen behind with housework and let clutter and dirt build up. The hoped for outcome is that both start at opposite ends of the scale and meet somewhere in the middle, each learning from the other.

I’ve caught a couple of shows and the effects of those people swamped with clutter and dirt is pretty clear. Their lives are really on hold: nothing is happening. At the end of the show, clearing out the clutter and cleaning seems to shift the energy and give them some motivation to start living again. This is a fundamental principle of Feng Shui and my focus is always drawn to cluttered, stagnant areas in a client’s home when I’m consulting.

But what about those people on the opposite end of the scale? The people who spend their lives cleaning, sterilising and regimenting their environment? Because it’s the opposite of the dreaded clutter does such an environment mean good Feng Shui?

Well, no it doesn’t.

Let’s look at what clutter is first of all. Clutter is stuff that is not used, broken and dirty. Anything that is used, beautiful, inspiring or uplifting is good Feng Shui because it will have a good effect on the energy of a place so being minimalist is not a necessity of Feng Shui.

Now let’s look at the clean, sterile and regimented environment. Where clutter holds and stagnates energy, sterility will often remove energy altogether.  In addition, energy needs to flow so, if everything in the home is regimented that means the energy will be contained and that is anything but natural. The effect of such an environment is clear in the lives of the people who are either obsessive or diagnosed OCD in terms of their home. They have very little life outside of their home and their lives are controlled by what they do. Never is it more apparent that our homes reflect our lives.

What does your home say about your life? And, if your life isn’t what you want it to be, try changing your home first.
