Is Feng Shui a Magic Pill?

‘So, if you suggest that somebody place a plant in a particular place and their finances improve how do you know it’s Feng Shui? How do you know it isn’t just a placebo effect and the person believes it’s because they placed the plant there that they are more fortunate?’

This came up during a recent conversation and I thought, Good Question.

Let’s look at the Placebo Effect first of all. The Oxford Dictionary defines the term as:

A beneficial effect produced by a placebo drug or treatment, which cannot be attributed to the properties of the placebo itself, and must therefore be due to the patient’s belief in that treatment.

In medical terms a placebo is something as empty of medication as a sugar pill.

Of course the question I was asked used the term in relation to Feng Shui but you get the gist of it. Does Feng Shui exist or is it just because the person has changed their belief?

What struck me most about that question was the words ‘just a placebo’. Just? Just? We can change our health or our life through changing our beliefs and we use the word ‘Just’?

Have you ever considered how amazing and magical the Placebo Effect is: we change our belief and we change our life; we change our belief and we heal ourself. That is enormously mind blowing stuff. How can we belittle it by using the word ‘Just’?

Let’s look at the Placebo Effect in terms of health, which is where it all started. If I’m ill, I want to get better. If medication does that fine (I’ll not get into my views on medication at this point!). If a sugar pill does that and I believe it’s medication then fine again. The thing is, I want to get better. I want the result of health and I will take the route I need to take to get there. Placebo or not, it won’t actually matter because it’s the results that are important.

So what about Feng Shui. On the one hand I would say the same thing: it’s the results that are important. But, many of my clients come to me to help them make changes in their life after they have tried all the self development tools: affirmations, meditations, vision boards and on and on….. And they see changes once they have implemented my suggestions based on Feng Shui.

What I do believe is that our personal energetic vibration resonates with the energetic vibration of our environment. That resonance may be dominated by the environment or it may be dominated by the individual and the power of one over the other will constantly change.

So, who’s to really know the answer? And does it really matter?
