The Phases of the Moon, how they affect our lives and intentions

Despite what you may think, the Moon and its phases affects us humans in many ways. It takes about 28 days, depending on how you look at it, for the Moon to complete its passage from New to Waning. According to Moonconnection.com, there are eight phases, as shown above. However, I like to keep it simple and just use four of them. As a Wiccan or Witch (if you want to simplify it) we typically use the four most popular phases, which are:

  • New Moon
  • Waxing
  • Full Moon
  • Waning

This does not mean that we ignore the other phases of the Moon. We just combine the Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, and Waning Crescent as a phase to do our work associated in that area.

You don’t have to be a Witch to use the Moon’s energies to enhance your life. The basic uses for the phases of the Moon are:

  • New Moon: Fresh starts, inspiration, new love, friendships, business-building, and financial prosperity.
  • Waxing: Boost any effort, benefit for complicated situations.
  • Full Moon: Dieting, breaking bad habits, obliterating stress or depression, and elimination of dysfunctional relationship patterns.
  • Waning: Psychic work, divination, past life memories, and truth.

To use the Moon phases to your advantage, here is a simple exercise to help you:

  1.  Pick a night that corresponds for your intention and the Moon phase you need. If it’s a New Moon endeavor, it will be completely dark except for stars. However, you will still be able to feel the Moon’s energy if you try to draw it in.
  2. Sit underneath the Moon or at least get in as much moonlight as you can. It may not be a Full Moon, but try to get in as much as you can.
  3. Close your eyes and feel the Moon’s energies flow into you.
  4. Think about your intent. If you are wanting to lose weight, focus on losing weight while drawing in the Moon’s energies.
  5. There is no time limit. If you feel like you have soaked up enough energy then open up your eyes and just look up at the Moon for a while before you go in.
  6. If you want, bring a stone out to soak the Moon’s energies in as well. Moonstone is good, but you can use a stone that is associated with your intent. Crystal Quartz (my fave) is a general all-purpose stone. You may want to cleanse before you bring it with you. Go to my article here to see how to cleanse.
