Stranded Saudi OFW afflicted with ulcer dies while awaiting repatriation

An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who has been seeking assistance from the Philippine consulate in Jeddah for his repatriation died the other day, according to the reports gathered by Filipino migrants rights group Migrante in Saudi Arabia.
#96 MIGRANTE party-list Vice chairperson John Leonard Monterona, citing reports from Migrante colleagues and several stranded OFWs in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, identified the OFW as a certain Danilo Grefadilyo, a native from Sorsogon.
Monterona added that per report, OFW Grefadilyo died inside the PH consulate building where the Filipino Workers’ Resource Center (FWRC) is also located. He, however, added that his group is ‘still verifying this report with PH Consulate and labor officials’.
“His exact age can’t be known yet as of this posting, but it is believed that he is more than 60 year old,” Monterona citing reports from Migrante colleagues in Jeddah, where around 2,500 stranded OFWs have camped out beside the PH Consulate building since April 10, 2013.
“From those who have known OFW Grefadilyo and his friends, they told us that he has been seeking assistance for repatriation from the PH Consulate since last year as he was diagnosed with ulcer and being old already,” Monterona added.
After his short admission to a hospital in Jeddah, he was admitted as ward at the PH Consulate FWRC until the sad news broke out the other day that he died, according to Monterona.
“We can’t understand what the PH consular, labor and welfare officials have done to assist OFW Grefadilyo for his medication and repatriation. His case should be treated an emergency situation. He should be confined in a hospital to attend health condition while attending his repatriation formalities,” Monterona lamented.
Monterona added this is not an isolated case. “In 2011, there was an OFW ward inside the Bahay Kalinga, run and managed by the PH embassy in Riyadh, who died due to serious ailment. We question then why she was not brought and admitted in a hospital for medication.”
He also cited the case of 72 year old OFW Mateo Amaro, from Caloocan City, who died on September 18, 2012. (see attached OFW Mateo Amaro photo)

“OFW Amaro had been seeking assistance from the PH Consulate for repatriation since May 2012, by then his health condition is not yet critical. But he got no favorable action from the PH consular, labor and welfare officials,” Monterona recalled.
Three weeks after OFW Mateo’s confinement at King Fahad Hospital due to stage 3 tuberculosis, he passed away on September 18, 2012. Six months after, his remains was received by his family in Caloocan City.
“These incidents (referring to the above-cited OFWs cases) shows PH govt. gross neglect, which is tantamount to criminal neglect, in providing assistance to distressed and stranded OFWs whom the government hails as ‘Modern Heroes’,”Monterona lamented.
“Direct on-site services and programs, and swift and free mass repatriation are among the Migrants Agenda #96 MIGRANTE party-list will push to institutionalize via legislation in Philippine Congress. We need a MIGRANTE representative(s) in Congress to do this,” Monterona concluded. # # #
