OFW rights group scores PH govt. agencies over conflicting numbers of OFWs nabbed amid ongoing Saudi crackdown

Migrante-Middle East (M-ME) today lambasted two PH government agencies for issuing conflicting reports on the number of stranded and undocumented overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) apprehended by Saudi authorities amid ongoing crackdown on illegal and overstaying migrants in the oil-rich Kingdom.

The group, as per its statement issued yesterday, said more or less there are 40 OFWs already apprehended by Saudi authorities since it intensified the crackdown of illegal and overstaying migrants per their own monitoring on the ground.

“Per our monitoring, there were a considerable numbers of undocumented migrants including OFWs, about 40 of them mostly women OFWs were nabbed during series of raids Kingdom-wide since last week and still on going,” confirmed by M-ME regional coordinator John Leonard Monterona.

Yesterday, Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) said no Filipino has been affected so far by the crackdown.

In a GMA online news report, there is ‘not a single report’ of affected Filipino workers, DoLE secretary Rosalinda Baldoz was quoted as saying on the same news report.

However in a separate report, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed also yesterday that ‘there are some 30 Filipinos already arrested on still unclear charges in Jeddah’.

Monterona said this is usual denial by usually inept PH government officials’ reaction when cases of distressed OFWs were reported to their attention.

“They are so quick to deny this kind of reports and yet will not even lift a finger to verify and promptly act to assist our distressed OFWs especially stranded women OFWs and their children,” Monterona averred.

Monterona challenges DoLE and the DFA to instruct their respective officials to visit all deportation centers in the Kingdom to know the real conditions of stranded OFWs and their children and so that they could get the exact numbers of apprehended OFWs.

Yesterday, Monterona also asked the Aquino administration on the status of the PH govt. repatriation program.

“We are asking what happened to the PH govt. repatriation program!? We are quite sure there are funds for our OFWs repatriation program especially to distress women OFWs and their children,”Monterona added.

Monterona cited there is P100-M emergency repatriation fund as mandated by Republic Act 10022 or the Amended Migrant Workers Act of 2010 and as per its Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR).

“The Saudi govt. intensified crackdown must be treated by the Aquino administration a situation that warrants emergency repatriation as there were 12,000 stranded OFWs, mostly women with children, who have already sought help to be repatriated. This is a clear case of humanitarian crisis,” Monterona concluded. # # #
