Remains of OFW found dead inside PH embassy-run shelter received by kin in Manila

The remains of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Kathleen Ann Viray Ilagan, 31 yrs. old, who was reportedly committed suicide inside the PH embassy-run shelter, had arrived Manila, according to migrant rights group Migrante-Middle East (M-ME).

M-ME regional coordinator John Leonard Monterona said he was able to get in touch with Micheileen, OFW Kathleen Ann’s sister, via text messages confirming the report on the repatriation of the remains of her beloved sister.

OFW Kathleen Ann’s remains arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport around 11:00 am today (April 16) via Gulf Airlines flight number GF-154, Monterona citing the sister of OFW kathleen Ann.

The Ilagan family doubted the police report they received from the PH embassy in Bahrain that OFW Kathleen committed suicide as they seriously cast doubt on the circumstances surrounding her death.

The family said she could not have fatally hanged herself from the doorknob which is only waist-high. Secondly, there was no clothesline or any source at the Embassy-shelter that would provide a cord for hanging, and third, there could or should have been other persons or security personnel at the Embassy’s shelter who could have witnessed the incident if indeed she hanged herself.

The sister confirmed to Monterona that along the remains of Kathleen inside the casket were a death certificate and police report, and papers related to repatriation formalities. However there was no autopsy report as confirmed by the victim’s sister Micheileen.

Asked by Monterona if the family has plan to conduct an autopsy of the victim’s remains, Micheileen said, “Yes po, meron po kaming plan na ipa-autopsy. Aayusin po namin (Yes, we have a plan to autopsy her remains. We are still preparing for it).

Monterona, like the Ilagan family, was puzzled by the swift repatriation of OFW Kathleen remains. “We could certainly notice the time difference in the repatriation formalities between an OFW remains on mysterious death case and to natural death due to illness or due to accident of an OFW abroad. The former will only take 2 to 3 days, while usually remains repatriation will take at least three months to a maximum of 6 months.”

Monterona further said, “There is really something wrong why the PH embassy did not thoroughly probe her death. Is there something they need to cover up?” the OFW leader asked.

Monterona said the PH ambassador to Bahrain should have a lot of explaining to do to OFW Kathleen family and to the Filipino communities not only in Bahrain but to all OFWs who deserve protection while at temporary shelter from their PH embassies and consulates around the world.

“We demand the recall of PH ambassador to Bahrain and the caretaker of its shelter. All embassy and labor officials in PH embassy in Bahrain should be investigated,” Monterona concluded. # # #
