Stranded OFWs camping out at PH Consulate in Saudi surge to 300; 75 others troop inside PH embassy in Riyadh

More stranded overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have joined the camp out staged by around 80 stranded OFWs yesterday, according to a Filipino migrants’ right group.

“Per report we received from the stranded themselves, their number surges to 300 now after fellow stranded OFWs have joined them camping out beside the PH Consulate building in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia,”said John Leonard Monterona, Migrante-Middle East (M-ME) regional coordinator.

Yesterday, Migrante officials in Jeddah have received unconfirmed report that a number of stranded and undocumented OFWs started to build their tent made of sacks near the PCG building in Jeddah, western city of Saudi Arabia.

Bobby Fajarito, Migrante-Jeddah vice chairperson and spokesman of Jeddah Filipino Society, immediately visited the site to verify said report and were surprised to see around 80 stranded OFWs, 20 of them are women with children.

“Most of them came from Dammam and in the Eastern part of Saudi Arabia, some from Riyadh, Saudi’s capital. They really wanted to be repatriated but PH officials allegedly are not attending their request for repatriation. They were only told that PH repatriation program has been stopped,” Fajarito quoting OFW Raffy Llaneta during a discussion at their tent.

Monterona noted that they could be the same stranded OFWs who have sought assistance for repatriation from the PH Consulate since last quarter of 2012.

“There were 7,000 stranded OFWs listed up at the PH Consulate as they seek to avail the repatriation program of the PH government, but only to be told that it was temporarily stopped,”Monterona added.

Monterona added that as per recent dialog with PH Consulate officials, there numbers of those who seek repatriation surge to 12,000.

“So, we are projecting that more and more stranded OFWs will join the camp out near the PH Consulate building in Jeddah. It may reach 800 to 1,200 or could be even more,” Monterona lamented.

Meanwhile, at the PH embassy in Riyadh there are 75 stranded OFWs have trooped inside the also to seek PH govt. assistance. (See attached photos of the stranded OFWs inside the PH embassy building in Riyadh).

“We have receive reports today from our Migrante colleague in Riyadh that there are 75 stranded OFWs who have sought a dialog with the PH embassy officials but unfortunately no officials have attended them,” Monterona quoting reports from Riyadh-based KGS-Migrante officers Eric Jocson, Joseph Valenzuela, and Melvin Jordan, all were their during the scheduled dialog.

On April 7, 2013, KGS-Migrante’s Jocson sent a request letter to PH embassy asking for dialog on the matter of the request of the stranded OFWs for their repatriation. On the same day, the letter was acknowledged by the PH embassy.

“The stranded OFWs were there today at the PH embassy for dialog but as of this time they no embassy officials have attended them. This is tantamount to criminal neglect and we condemned this in the strongest terms possible,” Jocson lamented.

According to Jocson, the stranded OFWs will stay inside the PH embassy until PH embassy officials will face and attend to them for a dialog.

“We will not be tired renewing our call to Pres. Aquino to immediately order all concerned PH govt. agencies to revive the govt. repatriation program so that the stranded OFWs, some of them women with children, will be repatriated and reunite with their families in the Philippines,”Monterona averred.

“Maybe the deplorable condition of Saudi stranded OFWs is not reaching the attention of PNoy who seems to be very busy attending and endorsing his Senatorial candidates during campaign sorties. We might ask our fellow OFWs, stranded and documented alike, to junk Team PNoy senatorial candidates, and vote candidates with genuine concerns and advocacy for the OFWs,”Monterona ended. # # #
