Iraqi Army: 1,000 Kurds Mutiny, Defect To Kurdish Peshmerga, Iraq Civil War Inevitable

1,070 troops, ethnic Kurds, mutinied when they were ordered to attack a Sunni Arab town where protests were taking place, and then refused to attend “disciplinary re-training” meant to ensure that they wouldn’t hesitate to attack Iraqi towns if ordered in the future.

Instead, the troops from the 16th Brigade have deserted entirely, and are seeking to join the Peshmerga, the paramilitary force loyal to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

You can see the painting on the wall from miles away. Civil war is coming to Iraq. There will be at least 3 sidesto this,probably more. In the North you have the Kurds who will probably seek to establsh their own independent state. the kurds are the largest ethnicpopulation in the world without a country of it own. 33 million people. The PKK just ended its insurgency in Turkey whch bodes ill for Iraq who now will haveto deal with both the PKK and the Peshmerga. Lets not forget the PYD in Syria either who control the far eastern half of Syria.

In the west and central provinces you will have your sunni tribes fighting for an independent state of their own. I imagine that insurgency would mirror Syria’s in that it will be a pish posh of groups from bathists to jihadis to tribesman. Finally, you will have the government, the military and they will be backed by the shia militias that are Iranian backed fighting to keep it all together or I could see them just hanging on to the south which where I believe most of the oil is anyways.

it will be a mess. It will be 2-3 times more horrific than Syria and it is Syria that will probably spark things off. Free Kurdistan. Hope for peace. -Mort
