Group warns more deaths could occur among old and sickly stranded Saudi OFWs, and toddlers
The Filipino migrant sectoral group MIGRANTE today warned that more deaths could still occur to old and sickly stranded overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) especially women and their children, who are temporarily seeking refuge at various PH-run half-way shelters as it calls on the PH govt. anew to fast track the repatriation of all stranded OFWs in Saudi Arabia.
Yesterday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) during a press conference confirmed when asked about a report that a 20-month old boy died on June 30 while inside the PH consulate in Jeddah.

“More deaths could occur among old and sick stranded OFWs though they’re temporarily sheltered at PH consulate in Jeddah,” said MIGRANTE vice-chairperson John Leonard Monterona, also the group’s coordinator in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
Monterona, however, clarified that his group is ‘not praying for it to happen’, but seriously re-issue a warning for the PH government and its concerned agencies to fast track the repatriation of still thousands undocumented and stranded OFWs in the oil-rich country.
Monterona said citing reports from some stranded OFWs in Jeddah, a 2-year old child also died sometime mid-June at the PH consulate shelter, aside from the 20-month old toddler reportedly died on June 30.
“There was also an old and sick woman who also died last month at PH consulate shelter in Jeddah, now totaling to 5 deaths, 3 were already confirmed by the PH officials in Saudi Arabia, while 2 remains to be confirmed,” Monterona revealed.
“It seems that PH officials in Saudi Arabia want to keep these (3 old OFWs’ deaths plus the 2 toddlers’ deaths) only to themselves. We want these deaths investigated to prevent more deaths to occur again and what’s really PH officials in Saudi Arabia have been doing in term of providing on-site assistance especially to sick and old and toddlers who need medical care and attention,”Monterona lamented.
Monterona further revealed there are five old and sickly stranded OFWs, while there are 6 children now still staying at the PH consulate shelter in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
In Riyadh at the PH rented shelter, there are at least 10 women and children numbering to 16, while around 15 women with children in Al-Khobar, in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia.
At the PH consulate shelter in Jeddah, Monterona disclosed there are 285 stranded OFWs at present, mostly women and some of them are pregnant.
At the ‘Tent City’, alongside the PH consulate building, as of yesterday there are at least 1,800 stranded OFWs awaiting repatriation documentation, according to Monterona.
The DFA said there are now 883 OFW repatriates from Saudi Arabia after the 26 repatriates arrived the other day from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
”This equate to only 8.8% out of the 10,000 stranded OFWs who have sought PH govt. assistance for repatriation. So, PH govt. repatriation efforts are still wanting,”Monterona noted.
Monterona said during Ramadan, which is expected to officially starts on July 10, PH embassy and consulate officials could maximize their time and efforts by documenting stranded OFWs who have not filled up or process their documentation formalities.
“The one-month Ramadan will hamper the issuance of exit clearances by the Saudi passport control offices or Jawasat as govt. offices timings are shortened. But PH embassy and consulate officials could use their time and efforts in documenting stranded OFWs who are not until now registered. Beefing up the number of PH staff involve in assisting the documentation of stranded OFWs would be of help to fast track the repatriation,” Monterona concluded. (end) # # #
