Press Release

8 July 2013

Stranded OFW’s toddler, third who died inside the PH consulate shelter in Saudi Arabia

‘PH officials in Saudi Arabia must be held accountable over death of sick toddler’

Thus, urged today by the Filipino migrant sectoral group MIGRANTE in reaction on the reported death of a child of a stranded woman overseas Filipino worker (OFW) temporarily seeking refuge at PH consulate in Jeddah while awaiting their repatriation.

On Monday, the Department of Foreign Affairs during a press conference confirmed that a 20-month old boy died on June 30 while inside the PH consulate in Jeddah.

“We have received information about the death of the boy from the stranded OFWs a week ago. We did try to contact PH consulate officials to confirm it but they are mum when asked about the death of the boy,” said MIGRANTE vice-chairperson John Leonard Monterona, also the group’s coordinator in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Monterona noted that the toddler’s death is the 3rd since the camp-out of thousands of stranded OFWs in April beside the PH consulate in Jeddah that later was dubbed ‘Tent City’.

He said the first was the reported death of OFW Eliseo Araneta from Calamba, Laguna, on April 18, who died of renal failure complications, then followed by the death of OFW Danilo Grefadilyo, 60, a native of Sorsogon, who died due to ulcer complications.

Both have sought PH consulate assistance for repatriation and in fact have stayed at the shelter provided by the PH consulate in Jeddah, according to Monterona.

“Both have decided to go out of the PH consulate shelter while sensing that they were not given proper medical attention and care. Unfortunately, days after coming back to PH consulate shelter, they succumb to death,” Monterona added.

Monterona noted that same unfortunate and deplorable situation had happened to the toddler of a stranded woman OFW –was forced to leave the PH shelter to look for medical care and proper attention which PH consulate could not provide.

“Despite public pronouncement and assurances by DFA sec. Albert del Rosario that the stranded OFWs if enrolled at PH consulate-provided shelter will be given utmost care and attention including continues supply of food, water, medicines, and sanitation, 3 persons have already died under PH consulate custody. This only proved that on-site assistance, including medical care and attention to old and sick stranded women and children, remains to be fulfilled,” Monterona averred.

By way of holding PH officials in Saudi Arabia accountable not only over the death of the toddler and 2 other stranded old OFWs Araneta and Grafadilyo, but also over the slow repatriation, sex exploitation of stranded women OFWs inside the Bahay Kalinga and PH run-and-managed OFW shelter, the brutal dispersal and arrest of some of the stranded OFWs in Riyadh, Monterona calls on PNoy to immediately recall PH envoy to Saudi Arabia Ezzadin Tago, Labor attache Adam Musa, and other senior PH officials in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

On July 7, MIGRANTE launched an online petition campaign calling for the immediate recall of Ambassador Tago and Labor attache Adam Musa, both are based at the PH embassy in Riyadh, Saudi’s capital (Here’s the link of the petition http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/immediate-recall-and-initiate-dismissal-proceedings.html)

The DFA said there are now 883 OFW repatriates from Saudi Arabia.

”This equate to about 8.8% out of the 10,000 stranded OFWs who have sought PH govt. assistance for repatriation. So, PH govt. repatriation efforts are still wanting,”Monterona noted.

“As early as this day, we are already raising serious concerns that come November 3 deadline of the extension to the July 3 90-day grace period, there are still hundred, if not still thousands, stranded OFWs awaiting repatriation in Saudi Arabia,”Monterona concluded. # # #
