Russia's Supersonic P-800 Yakhont Anti-Ship Cruise Missile Launch (720p)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Yakhont P-800S (SS-N-26)

Russia has supplied these missiles to several countries!
Iincluding: Indonesia, Vietnam and Syria [Article].

The Yakhont is a supersonic anti-ship missile capable of attacking maritime targets at great distances from shore (up to 180 miles). Unlike other coastal defense systems, like the Chinese C-802 or C-701, the SS-N-26 ‘Yakhont’ can engage targets well beyond the horizon, by navigating the long mid-course ‘leg’ using inertial guidance. the high speed means the missile would acquire lower drift, relative to a subsonic missile.

At a certain distance from the target the missile will activate its radar to acquire the target, it will then perform the terminal attack maneuver, according to the preplanned attack profile selected before launch – a direct horizontal attack or high angle dive, both are performed at extremely high speed, challenging the targets’ missile defenses and electronic countermeasures.

Multiple attacks of several missiles, attacking at different profiles, would challenge the target even more, as will a coordinated attack by high-speed and cruise type missiles.

It Fires @00m32s (720p)

Amerika’s air craft carriers are dinosaurs.

Not so many years ago the US Navy admitted that it could not adequately defend against these and other high speed Russian missiles. It is highly unlikely given the pitifully slow pace of naval weapons development in the US that anything has yet been done to correct that. At the same time, naval weapons like the Harpoon have been removed from American ships.

So if it comes to a slugging match between fleets, the US could possibly have only a few antiship missiles, all subsonic, a few helicopter or air-launched models but mostly end up reliant on the handful of 5″ guns on the ships. Bear in mind that Tomahawk missiles are either land attack or anti-ship, not both.

That’s not even counting the infamously poor state of anti-submarine warfare in the USN. Several times subs have gotten within missile and torpedo range of the carriers themselves. If the Russians were smart they’d pick off the relatively poorly defended escort ships and send the harder to sink carrier running right into a line of waiting subs.

” It is highly unlikely given the pitifully slow pace of naval weapons development in the US that anything has yet been done to correct that”

You should be picketing congress and demanding to pay more taxes so that the military industrial in the USA can waste more cash in secret projects.

Look mate if the criminals running the USA are stopped from building planes to attack the world then they will only resort to building drones to spy on and attack the general public know as american citizens.

I think china has more devastating cruse missiles then the Russians

THERE IS ONE SOLUTION! Railgun but it’s not ready yet.

I think most likely outcome would be severe losses on both sides. Defending ships from aircraft, missile and submarine attack is next to impossible. Russian ships are no better off in defense from such attacks.

I will disagree with Thane. These are formidable anti-ship missiles, yes. The USA has ESSM and RIM-116A Block 2 that are adequate to the task. Now that SM-6 and a active radar homer variant of ESSM are either in active service (former) or in advanced development (latter), they can hit the anti-ship missiles beyone 60KM, where they are still sluggish sub-sonic flyers. F-35B and C will be battle managers and can provide targeting information for these, as well there is JLENS (more for land-based defense at this point, but it’s going on one of the smaller JSHV vessels for evaluation).

The Phalanx 1B is a 20Mm gun system with 4500RPM and better rifling than its predecessor, and it is used for ‘last ditch’ defense. It’s not adequate to get a kill on the missile and avoid shrapnel/explosive effects from the missile being detonated close-aboard. I think ti’s phalanx’s questionable capability against supersonic cruise missiles that gives the impression that they’re not defeatable. In tests against mach two sea skimming target missiles, phalanx shoots them down consistently. But the shrapnel from the exploding missile hits the test barge.

To this issue, the navy has increased rate of fire from 3000 RPM to about 4500 RPM, and improved the rifling to increase the effective range. My personal opinion is the phalanx probably can’t get the job done, and we’re due for an upgrade to the 35mm millennium gun. Might not ever be done however. The rail gun technology is supposedly going to be built in 155mm, 57 mm, and 30 mm. The smallercalibers are said to have rates of fire of about 60RPM (per jeff head’s us navy blog). This should be satisfactory, and obviate the need for the 35mm, or phalanx moving forward.

Thane, take a look at LRASM-A and arclight. These are the US navy’s planned anti-ship missiles. LRASM-A is in advanced testing and should be deployed on us navy warhsips by 2015.

@Templar, here’s a link to Jeff Head’s US Navy blog, specifically on the subject of rail gun technology.

      http://www.freewebs.com/jeffhead/usn21/railgun.htm

He’s got good quality information and is a solid source. Note, the potential is there for rail guns to perform anti-ship work, anti-cruise missile and aircraft, and anti-ballistic missile work, due to the approx. 7.5KM per second velocity. Further, such velocities push point defense out to the horizon.

Remember Reagans Star Wars defense system that was scrapped. Surprise its been deployed for years. Its called mother. This is not common knowledge nor is most of our defenses. Over the winter a rocket was taken out over California. It was either us or aliens. We have another system in the sky I will look for it. The information comes from a whistleblower for a defense contractor. I am sure we have back engineered some pretty funky alien toys as well.

How nice…I liked the SCUDS better and they fell, mostly harmlessly, like ungainly adolescents. This one looks far more threatening. http://coldwarwarrior.com/
