A VPN helps nobody, whose information is usually hacked or leaked by the companies they deal with. For normal people, not doing criminal things, it can only provide a person more anonymity from people that don’t really give a shit who they are to even try to get information from an ISP about who they are. The ISP isn’t going to simply give this information out, to anybody not law enforcement. Try to go to a company with an IP address and ask the person’s identity, because they recognized you’re a real dipshit and told you so, on the web. Lot’s of luck.

VPN’s are cool but many VPN services are likely controlled and run by intel agencies. Then you have to guard against ip leakage, fingerprinting, and DNS compromising your privacy. I share your sentiment, but for me it’s more trouble than it’s worth. If you are a matter of interest, then it’s safe to say there is virtually nothing you can do to guarantee your privacy.
The only thing worse than lack of privacy is thinking you have privacy when you do not!
I have had a VPN for a while. And they are absolutely needed for general surfing. But the issue is, you could use it, make it look like your in Canada, but if you have to login in to Facebook, Google, Youtube, etc. Yes your actual location is hidden, but they are still collecting your personal data.
I wish that was not true, but often, what you want to see/read, you have to login to do. And then they made the VPN moot.
