Everyone knows that being awakened by a crying infant on an airplane is occasionally a part of the in-flight experience. However, being jolted from your sleep by a man shouting declarations (such as “Allahu Akbar!”) is not what the average passenger would expect.

While flying from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to Manila, Philippines, reddit user biff2204 said he awoke to the extraordinary scene of a man doing just this – and at the top of his lungs. Astounded by the display before him, biff2204 captured the moment and later shared the video on YouTube.

“[The man] had to cover his ears he was shouting so loud,” biff2204 said in the YouTube video description. “Just to be clear, I’ve seen plenty of people pray on flights before but never have I witnessed a call to prayer like this.”

The short clip portrays a man dressed in what appears to be traditional Muslim garb, screaming “Allahu Akbar” along with other phrases.

The Reddit post summoned an overwhelming response. Many commenters question why this kind of behavior would be permitted.

“I’m seriously confused why the staff did nothing about that,” wrote foodie42. “Let the guy finish the first time so it doesn’t escalate, then politely and sternly remind him that yelling anything on a plane is not acceptable.”

Despite this occurring twice within the 7-hour flight, biff2204 maintained a fairly balanced perspective on the matter.

“I have no problem with people adhering to their religious beliefs, but just please don’t shout in my face when I’m asleep,” biff2204 said.

While all can agree that the episode was “inconsiderate,” the man’s actions are cause for concern that a response could have resulted in something more drastic.

“Yelling “Allahu Ackbar” in a crowded airplane is this century’s yelling “fire” in a crowded theater,” wrote IonBeam2.

Perhaps this experience will serve as a lesson for future flights as airlines might consider implementing a new rule for decent, in-flight behavior.
