Michelle Obama Slams Women Trump Supporters – Is She Right?

Michelle Obama is in the news these days because of the fact she criticizes the women that voted for Donald Trump during the 2016 Elections. This happened in Boston during a conversation that talked about White house life, Michelle Obama’s soon-to-be released book and discrimination challenges women need to face.

In a talk that took place in front of a wide audience, she declared:

“Any woman who voted against Hillary Clinton voted against their own voice.”

As expected, this did bring up a lot of debate since such a statement is much stronger than what many expected. What is interesting is that she also declared that both her and Barack Obama support President Trump and really want the president to be successful. While various other topics were covered, like the Affordable Care Act that the Republicans try to repeal, it was that statement that jumped up in the media and that created a huge awareness around the event.

Is Michelle Obama right or not? This is not at all something that is easy to answer since it depends a lot on what side of the fence you are on. Let’s leave aside the really strong pro- and anti-Trump groups and think about everything in a different light.

The first question that comes up is “Are women having a voice or not?” If we are to take a look at the main points of authority in the country, they are mainly occupied by men. Unfortunately, many of them ended up doing some bad things in the past few months, leading to a lot of controversy and we see many women that started to criticize what was happening. It is quite clear that women start to have a voice and more are listening. We see more women in powerful positions every year and although the voice is still not as strong as that of men, it is growing.

The second question that comes up is “Was Hillary Clinton the voice of women?” Some will say that she was simply because of Trump’s history with women and the misogynistic statements that he made both before and after becoming US President. At the same time, is she representing all women that have a voice? NO! The women that buy from sites like 3Wishes.com, as an example, cannot relate to a woman that was always seen as secondary to her husband and that made so many bad decisions during her political career.

Women, just as men, have the right to vote based on their current beliefs. If they think that Trump was the best choice, this is what they should vote for. Does this mean they vote against their voice? No. They still have the voice and they still have the power to criticize the president for the decisions he makes and that are not what they want.

To sum up, the statement made by Michelle Obama goes against the principle of democracy in theory. However, in practice it can be argued that the vote did lead to a president that had a history of misconduct against women, thus diminishing the value that women have in society as a whole.
