Topless Protest Draws Thousands to Asheville

This would have been more than worth the three hour drive to Asheville.

ASHEVILLE — Dozens of women bared their breasts Sunday in a protest for gender equality that attracted so many gawkers that traffic on city streets slowed to a crawl.

Onlookers jammed into the area around the Vance Monument cheered and snapped photos as topless women, accompanied by men wearing bras or bikini tops, danced on the nearby fountain. Police estimated the crowd at its peak at around 2,000.

Like many in attendance, Asheville resident Gus Gustafson said it was curiosity that attracted him to the unusual spectacle.

“I’m not for it or against it,” he said. “But if the girls want to show their breasts, that’s fine with me. In a way, I think it’s good for them.”

I imagine Mr. Gustafson thinks it’s good for him too.  Actually, it’s not against the law for women to go topless in public.  This event has undoubtedly raised awareness of that which makes me wonder if more men will start flocking to North Carolina to go to school.
