The 2011 Jackass of the Year

Well… it’s come to this. Queen Bev was the overwhelming choice of CPO  readers as 2011′s ultimate jackass. This marks the third straight year she’s been in the top 5, and the first time in the number one slot.

I could write a long post about what qualifies her for this illustrious award.

Or I could just remind you of some of the headlines we’ve written about her this year:

- Gov. Bev Perdue has hired two of the state’s most prominent criminal defense lawyers as scrutiny of her 2008 campaign activity continues.

-Despite being given the boot by the voters back in November, Bob Etheridge (Jackass of the Year, 2010) will still be able to flush our tax dollars down the toilet.  Gov. Beverly Perdue appointed Etheridge as NC’s Stimulus Czar.

-Gov. Bev Perdue said she’s lobbying the federal government to help the state figure out how to repay millions in money the state borrowed to pay unemployment benefits – a problem that is baffling state legislators.

-Perdue Vetoes ObamaCare Challenge: Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue on Saturday vetoed a Republican-backed challenge to the federal health care overhaul.

-Gov. Bev Perdue on Monday appointed Jena Culler and Tyyawdi Hands to two vacant Mecklenburg District Court judgeships. Both Culler and Hands were unseated in the November elections.

-In a historic move, Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue today vetoed the GOP-authored $19.7 billion budget, despite Republican legislative leaders’ confidence that they have enough override votes.

-Perdue Vetoes Voter ID Bill.

-Speaking to a Cary rotary club today, N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue suggested suspending Congressional elections for two years so that Congress can focus on economic recovery and not the next election. “I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover.
(For the record, I think she was just making a bad joke. Most of her administration is a bad joke, so why should this be any different?)

-Gov. Bev Perdue today vetoed the bill that would gut the Racial Justice Act, the two-year-old law that allows death-row inmates to appeal their sentences based on statistical proof of racial bias.

And finally, Bev’s most recent headline:

A Wake County grand jury Monday handed down indictments alleging that a top aide to Gov. Bev Perdue’s 2008 campaign schemed to pay a staff member $32,000 for work that was kept off the books in violation of state election laws.
