Everyone gets fired in Timmonsville

Thanks to Honda’s manufacturing facility in Florence County, Timmonsville, South Carolina is becoming known as a great place to work in the Pee Dee region.
But it’s also becoming notorious as a bad place to work if you’re a public servant, as they’re firing everyone. Even cops and coaches.
Last week, the Mayor and town council voted 4-3 to fire pretty it’s entire municipal workforce – the administrator, treasurer, town clerk and police officers, asking Sheriff Kenny Boone to take over patrols in the town. Mayor Darrick Jackson explained this move was made to cut costs, saying the firings would save the town $400,000 a year. Apparently the town is about a half-million in the red and is late in repaying federal loans as well.

During the town council meeting where the cuts were announced, citizens were not able to present petitions with over three hundred signatures from those objecting to the police layoffs.
Earlier this month, Florence County School District Four, which serves the part of the county which includes Timmonsville, fired all but one coach in it’s high school athletics department. As with the town firings, the responsible parties – the school’s principal and district Superintendent – wouldn’t comment on the firings.
Two years ago, Timmonsville fired it’s fire chief and sewer system manager. This followed five firefighters resigning after claiming they weren’t paid nearly $5,000 by the town.
Current town attorney Eleazer Carter, who as legal counsel for the town would have likely played a role in the firings, was also seeking the Senate District 36 seat being vacated by Senator John Land (D-Clarendon) until being booted from the ballot over paperwork filing issues. He lost a 1994 Democratic primary bid for House District 64. It’s unclear if he will continue to seek the Senate seat as a write-in, petition or third-party candidate, or what role he may have played in the town’s financial situation.
