Democratic National Convention to include 2-hours of Islamic prayer

I always find it interesting to see who the two major parties will attempt to play to (pander to?) during their respective national conventions.

Over at the Republican National Convention this year, the openingincluded the Knights of Columbus — a Catholic fraternal organization —presenting colors; and Rabbi Dr. Meir Soloveichik giving the invocation.

This is in sharp contrast to what will occur at the Democratic National Convention, to be held this weekend at Bank of America Stadium. Islamic “Jumah” prayers are scheduled to occupy a full two hours on Friday.

And, this is notable, Democrats earlier denied a Catholic cardinal’s requestto say a prayer at the same event.

The Bureau of Muslim Affairs makes the claim that it is hosting the event “at the Democratic National Convention.” If this is true, convention planners have simply decided to go ahead with the their wishes to have this included during the convention — meaning the convention planners didn’t organize this themselves.

Up to 20,000 people are expected to attend the Friday prayers and Jibril Hough, a spokesman for the Bureau of Indigenous Muslim Affairs (BIMA), said the purpose of the event is to hold political parties accountable for the issues faced by Muslim-Americans.

In particular, the event will target the Patriot Act, the NYPD, the National Defense Authorization Act, and anti-Shariah sentiment.

This is what they are hoping to accomplish? Dang, I wish them the best of luck.

Just as a reminder, the Democratic Party ran on the premise that the Patriot Act was evil, that GITMO should be shut down, that President Bush’s wars were illegal, and that civil liberties of Americans were in jeopardy.

However, after winning both houses of Congress in 2006 and winning the White House in 2008, GITMO remains open, the Patriot Act was renewed, the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 was signed by President Obama, we have a U.S. Government panel that can place U.S. Citizens on a “kill list,” and President Obama has attacked Libya and Somalia and has warned other Middle East leaders who don’t play ball with the U.S. that they could be next.
