Bill Connor: "Israel needs America's support - not four more years of Obama"

Americans were privy to the inner “heart” of the Democratic Party in Charlotte and it wasn’t pretty.

Unlike previous convention platforms, this years’ initial Democratic platform deleted any reference to God or Jerusalem (as the capital of Israel). Due to overwhelming criticism by mainstream America, the convention chairman attempted to re-insert the necessary language. The resulting vote was a fiasco. By a voice vote heard by millions, the delegates of the Democratic Convention voted against God and against Jerusalem as capital of Israel. Most know of the secular-progressive shift of the Democratic Party over recent years, so the vote against God was predictable. However, the Jerusalem vote combines with the anti-Israel shift of the Obama Administration, including the recent snub of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and becomes alarming.

At a time when the Islamic World is screaming for the death of both America and Israel (and Israel is facing nuclear annihilation by Iran), it is shocking to watch the Obama Administration and Democratic Party to attempt to put a wedge between our nations. Before the Democrats push us further away from Israel, it may be time to review why Israel is our traditional ally and why we need a change in US leadership back in support of our friend.

Zionism, the nationalist ideology of a Jewish return to the lands of present day Israel, began in the late 19th century. At that time, present-day Israel was a backwater in the Ottoman Empire. The Zionist movement was a secular, nationalist endeavor, meant to give Jews a homeland and some respite from persecution. The Jews turned the desert backwater into a green and lush first world country. Interestingly, when Israel first declared independence in 1947, the Soviets were the first to recognize the new state. Truman, against the advice of George C Marshall and with his threatened resignation, boldly recognized Israel. Harry Truman would not have fit in to the “new” Democratic Party and would likely be booed at convention.

US support was not a real factor for Israel until the 1967 war, and yet Israel was an ardent supporter of the US in the fight against communist domination. Virtually every Arab nation aligned with the USSR at some point during the Cold War. Israel stood as a beacon of freedom and democracy during the Cold War and kept faith with America.

The true history of the Arab/Israeli conflict is one of Israel attempting to play by the international rules to its detriment. Israel was willing to take the UN partition plan in 1947, yet was attacked by all Arab neighbors upon declaring independence. At the end of hostilities, the State of Israel was slightly larger than the land designated by the UN plan. In 1956, 1967, and 1973, Israel was either attacked, or forced to take pre-emptive action against multiple Arab enemies. After the ‘56 and ‘73 wars, Israel gave back the Sinai Peninsula, a land mass larger than Israel. In 1999, Prime Minister Barak offered Palestinian President Arafat the entire Gaza and 95% of the West Bank. Arafat turned him down and helped formant the ensuing intifada. In 2000, Israel made the unilateral decision to pull out of Southern Lebanon. This was done despite the risk posed by enemies in Lebanon who later came back to attack Northern Israel.

To top all other concessions, in 2005 Israel unilaterally withdrew from the Gaza Strip. In order to effect this decision, Israeli soldiers were required to forcibly remove Israeli citizens from their generation-old homes and communities. As soon as Palestinians occupied these communities, mobs destroyed synagogues and homes. An early Hamas website statement gives the Palestinian leadership’s vision of the future (yes, this is the same Hamas that now holds political power in Gaza): “We will rule the nations, by Allah’s will, the USA will be conquered, Israel will be conquered, Rome and Britian will be conquered. The Jihad for Allah…is the way of truth and the way for salvation and the way which will lead us to crush the Jews and expel them from our country Palestine. Just as the Jews ran from Gaza, the Americans will run from Iraq and Afghanistan and the Russians will run from Chechnya, and the India will run from Kashmir, and our children will be released from Guantanamo. The prisoners will be released by Allah’s will and not by agreements, but they will be released by the sword and they will be released by the gun.” (then pictures of dead and wounded American and a burning American flag).

Due to the Obama Administration’s support of the Muslim Brotherhood’s rise to power in Egypt, Israel now faces a grave threat at its southern border. For three decades after the Camp David Accords, bringing peace between Egypt and Israel, Israel has little concern over Egypt. Though Hosni Mubarak was not perfect, he kept the lid on Islamic radicalism, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood (The same force that murdered his predecessor, President Sadat). Mubarak and the Israelis understood the danger posed by allowing political power to the Brotherhood, and the reality that Brotherhood-backed Sharia Law would end Democracy.

Israel now faces the ultimate threat of nuclear annihilation from Iran. Iran has made clear it will “wipe Israel from the face of the Earth” if it obtains a nuclear weapon. Unfortunately, the Obama administration decided not to use forceful foreign policy in dealing with Iran. Worse, the US State Department has sent the coded message to Israel that we would oppose any attack by the Israelis against Iran.

From history, Americans understand Israel is a good democratic nation, surrounded by many hateful enemies. Those same enemies are now burning American flags in the streets and even killing our ambassadors. Without our support, Israel’s hostile neighbors, particularly Iran, will attempt to destroy it. It is time America rebuke the current administration and the anti-Israel bent of the Democratic Party. If Israel is allowed to fall, America is next.
