Super Bowl crisis: wing shortage

We all love our “wings.” Hot & spicy, cajun, blue cheese and ranch. But now we don’t only have Obama’s “war of coal” we have a “war on wings.”

First they take our freedom, and now they take our hot wings. No, seriously – the federal ethanol mandate is driving down the number of chicken wings available for this Sunday’s Super Bowl. The 2013 Wing Report released by the National Chicken Council documents a wing shortage numbering in the millions due to high feed prices as a result of corn farmers struggling to meet ethanol quotas with a reduced crop due to a summer drought.

“Chicken companies produced about one percent fewer birds last year, due in large part to record high corn and feed prices,” Roenigk said. “Corn makes up more than two-thirds of chicken feed and corn prices hit an all-time high in 2012, due to two reasons: last summer’s drought and pressure from a federal government requirement that mandates 40 percent of our corn crop be turned into fuel in the form of ethanol. Simply put, less corn equals higher feed costs, which means fewer birds produced.

The clincher – several days after this report came out, $65,000 worth of wings were stolen in Georgia.

Police say two storage warehouse workers stole $65,000 worth of chicken wings Gwinnett County police investigators said they believe Dewayne Patterson and Renaldo Jackson used a rental truck on Jan. 12 and took 10 pallets of frozen wings from Nordic Cold Storage. The theft comes at a time when demand and prices for chicken wings are at the highest.

Coincidence? That’s for you to decide, but the war on wings is real, and it’s coming on the biggest sports weekend of the year.

So if you haven’t stocked up on wings, you may have to buy them on the black market.
