“Hornady Suspends Production of 150 Ammo Types and 150 Bullet Types for Balance of 2013″
This is an effort by Hornady to increase production of more popular bullets and ammunition.
In order to increase deliveries of its most popular types of ammunition and bullets, Hornady announced that it will temporarily suspend production of 150 bullet types and 150 ammo types. IMPORTANT: These bullet and ammo products are NOT being discontinued. Rather, these less-popular, suspended items will simply not be produced for the remainder of 2013. By doing this, Hornady can reduce tool/machinery changes and thereby increase production of products in highest demand. On July 2nd, Hornady issued this statement:
Dear Hornady Customer:
As you are aware, 2013 has been one of the most challenging years ever in the sporting arms industry. We are proud of the increases in production we have achieved this year, but we are still faced witha demand that exceeds our ability to produce.
In efforts to increase production, we have reviewed everything, refining procedures, adding people, and equipment when possible. One area that will help us produce more: cutting the number of changeovers in our production machinery.
In order to reduce changeovers, we are announceing the temporary suspension of over 150 ammunition items and 150 bullet items, for the balance of 2013.
Attached you will find the list of items that will be suspended. Our plan is to remove the orders for these items from our system, beginning July 10th, and notify you of the cancellations. We will continue to monitor and update this list as the market conditions change.
Our goal is to try to deliver more to every customer, and while this may impact certain categories, our overall delivery should improve.”

Great! It’s about time one of the manufactures used some common sense…
Ummm, not really. Read the link. They’re suspending about 12 different .223/5.56. Also: .38, .380, .40, .44 and .45 (colt and ACP).
So I’m really curious what they mean by “popular.”
You misunderstood. The .223 stuff being suspended are all non-standard projectiles. Not that they are not used, I see several on the list that will effect certain groups of people like bench resters. However, what they are doing is running the crap out of the most common projectiles like the standard (bulk) .55 grain FMJ and soft points as well as the 62 grain ones. These are probably like 80% + of their sales anyway so it makes sense to just leave the machines set up on them and run, run, run!
The ones being temp suspended are all less commonly used and more expensive. Don’t panic.
Same with the pistol calibres.
This sounds crazy but even tho I think I know why as they say, would that be one way of not selling to Govt? If you don’t have it, ? Did I misunderstand an under lying meaning?
So they must be making the governments favorite calibers now.
All the ammo companies need to stop production for the feds
That was something I didn’t understand. The US still maintains at least one arsenal that does nothing but produce ammunition for the military. Certainly it would have been more cost effective for the arsenal to ramp up production for DHS and others than to buy from civilian companies.
Are you referring to Lake City? If so, sure, that’s a primary production site for the government, but it’s also where we civilians get a lot of our ammo, too. I think many other manufacturers have stopped selling to the fed.
lick my nuts….dry roasted in the shell nuts!
Follow the money, many of these calibers are common use. And just like gasoline they will create an artificial shortage to keep prices high. Hornady is already one of the highest priced suppliers of ammo out there.
Ever wonder if they are manufacturing Ammo for large purchasers like the DHS?
Who owns Hornady?
Follow the money.

“In order to increase deliveries of its most popular types of ammunition and bullets” Uh what is more popular than the 45ACP? How about the fact that 22 caliber is selling at 5000% higher than it was just two years ago?
Hornady is just cow towing to the Elite and government pressure.
I will no longer buy their products.
Don’t get your bowels in an uproar!
Personally I think the article above should have included links to Hornady’s site which clearly explains their thought process and clarifications.
The like below lists what they WILL BE MANUFACTURING for the remainder of 2013.

Oh Thanks, My bowels are calm now.
products.
Read that on their site before it was on this site…..just double talk by Hornady. They should have said they got a new contract, and do not have time for public sales. I never used Hornady at the range anyways, way overpriced….now prob would never even use any of their
The big ammo store in Tenn that I shop at told me there is plenty of ammo being manufactured and that shortages are caused by the feds limiting amounts the ammo companies are allowed to ship. If thats truly the case then I don’t seen how this will help supplies.
