Trayvon Martin: The Teachable Moment That Never Was

Tragically, if unsurprisingly, a President, culture and media forever in search of its so called teachable moments is perfectly content to ignore the only genuine one in the George Zimmerman, Trayvon Martin story. They do that despite it being an absolutely critical one, perhaps capable of helping to save hundreds of thousands of lives over time. 

Put directly and too harshly, the tragic reality is that Trayvon Martin got, not only what he deserved, but what he sought, with or without realizing it, on the night of his encounter with George Zimmerman. Less bluntly, thug-life and even wannabe thug-life is not a good life, rarely a long life and never a life that any young man – or woman – of any color or race should want to pursue. Every indication is that Martin was doing precisely that and whatever, if any, intervention his family was employing wasn’t working.

As I said on Twitter, here was a 17 year-old boy serving a ten day suspension from school. If Trayvon Martin had been grounded and at home, instead of wandering the night alone and unsupervised the night he encountered Zimmerman, he’d most likely still be alive. But we no longer seem to be able to admit truths like that as a society for some reason, particularly as it relates to minority cultures. No, that’s racist! Yet, it’s those cultures, not some notion of a white America paying the price for it.

Even more sadly, now inspired by so many of the very sports and entertainment icons ringing their hands over Trayvon Martin and making ignorant, hateful comments about Zimmerman and whites as a whole, more and more young people in America actually seem to be inspired to pursue a lifestyle that, if it doesn’t kill them, will likely ruin them. Lacking the prowess of a first round draft pick, even a half-way decent pop singer, or Hollywood ingenue, when they’re done, all they’ll have left is some cheap bling and the tattoos. Whoop de fricking doo.

But try to point that out and all you’ll get is attacked.

On Monday, The Daily Caller published a list of Martin’s tweets—his handle was @NO_LIMIT_NIGGA—that reveal him as a posturing teenager rather than a choirboy. (“Lol so daisha think she a boss caus she walked in class late 2day…I do dat everyday,” says one.) The story notes that the photograph attached to the account depicts Martin “smiling, gold-toothed, into a camera in front of an electronic dartboard.” Meanwhile the media was flooded with the news, if one could call it that, that Martin was once suspended from school for possession of a plastic baggie with marijuana residue on it.

First, there was the discussion of what Trayvon Martin was wearing. “I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was,” Geraldo Rivera said on Fox & Friends last week, later suggesting that the sweatshirt made him look like a “wannabe gangster.” Then conservative bloggers started digging through Martin’s Facebook page for information that might raise doubts about his character. It turns out that one of Martin’s friends had written, under a happy birthday message, “damn were you at nigga needa plant;” according to Dan Riehl at Riehl World View, “Some may interpret that as Martin having somehow been involved in selling [marijuana].”

Try to show any concern over issues directly contributing to the murder of over ten thousand blacks in less than two years by spotlighting elements of Martin’s life and his bad choices – and that makes you a racist? Talk about a world upside down. And worse, the very people committed to covering up this reality are being celebrated as heroes and leaders. They are keeping generation after generation of urban blacks trapped in lives filled with poverty, desperation and untimely death, enslaved now not to plantation owners but to liberal politicians – including our first black President – who ply them with goodies for votes, neither of which are meant to truly satisfy them as human beings.

Shame on them – the Sharptons, Corey Bookers and Barack Obamas disgust me.

Right. But I doubt he’d be thrilled were he suspended from school for ten days and still out roaming unsupervised at night, or getting high and posting images of it – or discussing buying illegal guns on Twitter with Dad – would he?

All the race baiting and ignorant pandering of Obama and his ilk does is consign yet more young blacks to an early grave. They aren’t leaders; they’re pimps, as well as panderers and they’d be ashamed of themselves if they had any integrity or interest beyond their own selfish political ambitions.

Trayvon Martin brought an empty bag of Skittles to a gun fight he thought was going to be a beat down of his own doing and he got killed. That’s life in the big city, or just another day in the hood if you prefer, bro. Deal with it. Neither Obama and his fellow pols, nor the media, or the sports and entertainment icons have the courage, or wisdom to speak the kind of truth to genuinely begin to put an end to it. So, get back to me in a year or two after another 10,000 blacks have been murdered without so much as a peep from your sorry asses and tell me how much you care.
