£12,000 Cabinet makers Tool Set

£12,000 Cabinet makers Tool Set

I ran across this the other day, and thought I’d share it with you. It comes from the £ Daily Mail, and with usual silliness of the news media they speak of it as DIY tools. As anybody who know much about woodworking will realize, this is a classic cabinetmaker’s chest. And an extraordinarily nice one as well.

But to consider this as do it yourself tools, or even tools for a carpenter is misleading, some of the tools are common of course, like that Estwing hammer.

What tools I could identify from the article, Lie-Nielsen planes and such. The are the best hand tools you can own. In fact, I saw the picture in my reader and started drooling. Mostly because my hobby (one of them) is cabinet making.

And by the way, I wouldn’t consider £12,000 a completely ridiculous price for this, it is not, probably, a bargain but with tools and proper storage included neither is it completely out of line. And that cupboard is flat beautiful.

Quite frankly, I would have trouble deciding whether to use this in my shop or display it on the wall of my office cause it is that beautiful.

If one good thing has come from the recession it’s our newfound DIY expertise, as more of us commit to improving our own homes rather than employing others to do it for us.

But if, like most of us, you can’t afford to pay a team of builders to rennovate your downstairs loo, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to afford the new Sir Terence Conran Tool Set and Cabinet.

Created to celebrate Sir Terence‘s 80th birthday, this luxury set costs a staggering £12,000.

Sir Terence Conran Tool Set and Cabinet – yours for £12,000

As I said, this set is a dream for a classical cabinet-maker, and here we see why. Sir Terence is a furniture designer, and by the looks of his site a very good modern one. I doubt many would be surprised that I’m not a huge fan of modern furniture, my taste, for the most part cuts off at Craftsman, but his work is very, very nice, and I’m guessing quite well made, as well. here’s a bit about him, from his website.

Terence Conran

Sir Terence Conran is a name that has become synonymous with furniture design around the world. Born in 1931, Terence enrolled at the Central School of Art and Design, London in 1948 however departed in 1951 at the age of 19 to work for architect Dennis Lennon. In 1952 Terence set himself up as an independent designer opening Conran & Company from a basement in Notting Hill.
Driven by the notion of establishing a shop that would sell modern designs to the general public he founded home furnishing chain Habitat with the first opening in Chelsea in 1964. The success of Habitat further fuelled Terence’s retail ambitions and in 1973 the first branch of The Conran Shop opened on the site of the original Habitat store in Chelsea. In 1990 Terence set up Conran Holdings from an apartment in Shad Thames, London and had a major role in the regeneration of the area close to Tower Bridge, which was managed through the Conran Foundation: a charitable fund set up in 1980. Throughout the nineties and noughties The Conran Shop continued to expand and now has 10 stores with outlets in Japan, France, Milan, Ireland, America and its two London-based stores on Fulham road and Marylebone High Street. In addition to his success in the retail sector Terence has achieved notable triumphs in other pursuits. He has written over 30 informative books that broadly reflect his design philosophy, selling over 20 million copies of his publications worldwide.
