In Berkeley, Kalifornia It Was “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” Not “Columbus Day”

I haven’t spent $1 in Berkeley, Kalifornia since the City Council there decided to condemn U.S. military action against Afghanistan.  Then they told the U.S. Marines their recruiting office wasn’t welcome there.  So it’s been 12 years since that vote.

And on Monday, because of a movie, I returned to Berzerkely.  I went to see The World’s End (which was funny until the last 20 minutes).  Although I didn’t pay for lunch, I did spend about $20 on movie tickets.

Walking from University Avenue where I had lunch a few blocks down the Shattuck Avenue I remembered why Berkeley is a disgusting environs that made smelly Haight Street in San Francisco seem almost Conservative in nature!

So on my way to the movie theater there was a mother with her daughter walking behind us.  I could hear their conversation and it went something like this:

What holiday is it today?

It’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

The girl couldn’t really pronounce the word “indigenous” but she tried.

What’s “Indig-oh-nus Peoples’ Day?”

It’s to celebrate all of the Native Americans who lived here before the white man came.

What are “Native Americans?”

They were the first Americans!

Oh.

And so the indoctrination begins…

I remember – back in 1992 – when it was the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ “discovery” of America.  Back then it was called “1492 to 1992, 500 Years of Persecution” or something along those lines.

Of course, Dances with Wolves had come out only two years before showing how loving, peaceful, and harmonious the American Indians were.  All of the Liberals didn’t see the film where the American Indian tribes would go to war with one another and kill each other.

That would ruin the illusion.

Christopher Columbus probably didn’t even discover America to begin with but, regardless, Leftists view European settlement of the Americas as a destruction of native cultures and use this as an excuse to reject Eurocentrism by claiming it is nothing but a violent culture that should be rejected and the “native” cultures should be embraced so as to “harmonize” with Nature.

Then they get in their imported hybrid cars that are filled with heavy metals mined in China that pollute the water and they buy their free trade coffee grown in South America that requires even more oil to get to their local GMO-free market to carry their goods home in their hemp bag they never wash so it’s teeming with bacteria that makes them sick.

As I began to think of all of these things I realized why I never liked going to Berkeley and why my 12 year absence from there wasn’t long enough.

The only thing that would have made it worse would have been if some Leftist had approached me and wanted to discuss my VW Bus.

My new bumper sticker.
