Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge (Video) for bone marrow donation awareness!

Today my son and I participated in the Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge, running into the 30-degree Atlantic Ocean until we were submerged!

And, truth be told, this activity was definitely outside of my comfort zone as I don’t go into the water during the summer when it’s 95 degrees outside let alone a January day when it’s 32!

Michael Haltman and his 17-year-old son, Cory Haltman, took the plunge to raise awareness for the bone marrow donation registry. His 23-year-old daughter, Samantha Haltman, is donating bone marrow to a patient struggling with blood cancer, and they wanted to show support.

The water was a shock — Haltman said he felt it was difficult to breathe.

“I wore a winter coat until it was time to go, but others were out there for an hour and a half only in bikinis,” Haltman said. “Parts of my body are still re-emerging. The sun wasn’t out. It was freezing. Water temperature wasn’t much warmer.” (AP)

We did this in support of one of my daughters who is going to be donating bone marrow to a patient with a blood cancer through her participation in the national bone marrow registry at BeTheMatch.org.

For someone with this disease who is in need of a bone marrow transplant the first choice for a donor would of course be a blood relative.

But, if for some reason that is not a viable alternative, the registrants at BeTheMatch.org will be scoured to determine if someone is a suitable match.

I have been in this registry for about 20-years and have never been called while my daughter, a member for only a few was.

So go to BeTheMatch.org, read about the organization and the ease with which you can register, then join today so that someday you might be able to offer someone the potential to beat cancer!
