“America, the Beautiful” Sung in Different Languages During Superbowl Ad
One of the most influencial books I read growing up was by a Frenchman, St. Jean de Crèvecœur, titled Letters from an American Farmer. What came from this book is the phrase “melting pot.” In cooking, a melting pot is a big metal container that one simmers over a flame and combines various ingredients until they all form a new substance. We call that “new substance” an “American.”
For Liberals it is known by a dirtier word: “assimilation.”
So an advertisement for a popular soft drink showed America, the Beautiful sung in multiple languages.
No big deal, right?
The entire point of the United States is to take disparate races, ethnicities, and smoosh them together so they all meld into something new… an American.
Americans might like salsa or soccer or apple pie but they are all Americans first. Americans believe in Democracy, equal rights, freedom, law and order, and opportunity.
And we do all of that speaking a common language (English).
Liberals don’t like this because they seek to breakdown the dominant power structures because they assume they are evil and corrupt.
Speaking English is thus bad because it is the dominant power structure and those who do not speak it are left at a disadvantage. Instead of helping those people to empower themselves by learning English they seek to make society multi-lingual.
Conservatives were horrified by America, the Beautiful sung in multiple languages. Liberals were outraged that Conservatives were outraged and likely were thinking words like “racism” and “bigot.”
Sure, it was just an advertisement but what was hidden behind that shows the increasingly Balkanized society in which we live and the direction towards which our society is heading.
I, for one, won’t be buying Coca Cola anymore.
