Glenn Beck's Toys For Tots Angers Idiots and a State Rep. With a Boundary Problem

Many people, including myself believe the surge of children crossing the border is the fault of an administration that either encouraged the onslaught via its promises of amnesty or were too incompetent to recognize the signs indicating the flood of illegals was about to happen. For the long-term sanctity of the U.S. borders those children need to be sent home as soon as possible. But until they are sent home, they need to be treated kindly after all they are kids and came here at no fault of their own.

Glenn Beck on Tuesday announced that he will be bringing tractor-trailers full of food, water, teddy bears and soccer balls to McAllen, Texas on July 19 as a way to help care for some of the roughly 60,000 underage refugees who have crossed into America illegally in 2014.

Beck said he will be joined by Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah), Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), and a number of pastors and rabbis.

Through no fault of their own, they are caught in political crossfire,” Beck said of the children. “And while we continue to put pressure on Washington and change its course of lawlessness, we must also help. It is not either, or. It is both. We have to be active in the political game, and we must open our hearts.

(…)Everybody is telling me I’m seeing subscriptions down; I’m seeing Mercury One donations down,” Beck said, growing emotional. “I’m getting violent emails from people who say I’ve ‘betrayed the Republic.’ Whatever. I’ve never taken a position more deadly to my career than this — and I have never, ever taken a position that is more right than this.”

“We’re going to fill some tractor-trailers with food, with water,” Beck said. “The churches have asked us if we could bring teddy bears and soccer balls, so we’ve loaded up a whole tractor-trailer of nothing but teddy bears and soccer balls. And then I’m going to go serve breakfast and lunch, and I’m going to help unload these trucks, hot meals for 3,000. That’s what we’re doing.”

Understand Beck is not using government funds he is taking money out of his pocket from the pockets of volunteer donors and using it to help kids. Heck, that is the conservative way—rather than the government, the private sector is helping via charity. But who knew an act of charity could be so controversial.

Apparently there are some conservatives who have become apoplectic over Beck’s toys (and food) for tots effort. They say he is encouraging amnesty for illegals.

Chris Loesch who among other great qualities is married to the Blaze’s Dana Loesch (and one of my former editors at Big J) got into a Twitter debate with the wife of Ohio State Rep. Andrew Brenner (R&Nutjob). Mrs. Brenner is one of those folks who believe Beck’s actions was like giving them amnesty, Chris took the point of view that Beck’s action was a commendable act of charity.  Many of us have political debates at 140 characters or less. But this is where it got creepy.

State Rep Brenner took Chris’ twitter discussion with his wife a step further, even though he had no relationship with the Loesch’s outside of social media, he felt it was appropriate to look up the Loesch’s number and violate their privacy by calling Chris to complain about his stance on the Beck donations. Worse yet the Loesch family is on vacation.

There are two things going on here, first of all as the Brenner family should understand when someone is in the public eye, as both Dana Loesch and Rep. Brenner are, there needs to be a separation between public and private lives. Public lives are voluntary and in the case of both Loesch’s much of it is consumed with political issues. Private lives are about family and children. Breaking the sanctity of the barrier between private an public lives is justifiably seen as a threat to that family. Even a seemingly benign act such as angry call from a state rep. with boundary problems will be felt by protective parents as a threat.

The second issue is Beck’s delivery of toys, food and water to the kids sent to America by their parent(s). It should be commended not criticized.  Americans have a history of being charitable, especially during a crisis. 60,000+ kids at our southern border is a crisis. Yes we should send them home, but until then we need to treat them the same way we would want our kids to be treated if they were alone in a different country.

The Hebrew word for charity tzedaka, has in it root the word tzedek, which means righteous, because Jews are taught that giving charity is one of the keys to righteousness.  Glenn Beck bringing food, water, and toys to the kids at our border is the act of a tzadik, a righteous person.
