U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., continues to beat a concerned drum over threats to the U.S. power grid. That includes possible geomagnetic storms and electromagnetic pulse blackouts.
The latter has worried so-called ‘preppers’ and those worried about doomsday scenarios.
But there are others worried about natural or artificially created bursts of energy overloading and disabling power grids key to commerce, transportation and everyday life.
Franks — who has brought up electromagnetic pulse fears before — introduced new legislation today to get the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to focus more on the power grid security.
Geomagnetic storms include distribances such as solar flares and winds from the sun that might disrupt power grids.
“The Critical Infrastructure Protection Act will enhance DHS threat assessments for geomagnetic disturbances and electromagnetic pulse blackouts which will enable practical steps to protect the vital electric grid that serves America and her critical financial, agricultural, medical and emergency response capabilities and many other critical systems,” said Franks who represents Glendale, Sun City and other West Valley areas.
The Franks measure comes as Congress tries to come up with funding for DHS.
