How I came to Support Donald Trump

How I came to Support Donald Trump – The Early Days

How I came to Support Donald Trump was a lengthy process. Being a lifelong New Yorker, I learned about Donald Trump in my teen years. Even back then, the flamboyant developer never minced words and said exactly what was on his mind. Since it opened, Trump Tower was a place I always went to for inspiration, to feel uplifted and to relax in the outdoor public plazas. I’ve walked in many times flat broke and walked out feeling like a billionaire.

A year before I graduated Holy Cross High School, young Trump had taken over the failing Wollman Rink and turned it into a resounding success in three months under budget.

Over the years, Trump racked up a string of successes – and yes a few failures. I always admired him as a doer.

What better place to go to celebrate my high school graduation, then a Tower of Success?

To celebrate my high school graduation in June 1988, I went to Trump Tower.

This is a rendering of Trump Parc at the Southwest Corner of 6th Ave. and Central Park West. The day of my high school graduation ceremony, I visited Trump Tower to celebrate.

The Trump Tower atrium waterfall has always been one of my haunts. I went here the day of my high school graduation ceremony to celebrate.

How I came to Support Donald Trump – Twin Towers II

I only met Trump one time and that was 11 years ago, when he held a press conference trashing the “Freedom Tower” design at the time as a “pile of crap” and calling for modernized Twin Towers to be built.

Though the proposed Twin Towers II project Trump showcased that day never got built, his industry experience and political capital likely led to the scrapping of that lousy design and the building of One WTC as it exists today.

When Trump spoke in May 2005, the WTC site was a living example of “a camel is a horse designed by committee.” Trump’s words embarrassed the stakeholders involved in the site’s re-construction and motivated them to take corrective action. Today, One WTC is a magnificent building. For two days straight, I had the good fortune to be at the One WTC Observatory. Day One was the Invitation Only Open House, and Day Two was the historic Ribbon cutting and Grand Opening.

How I came to Support Donald Trump – Observing for a Year

Exploratory Committee – January through June 2015

Fast forward 10 years to late January 2015. Donald Trump had formed an exploratory committee. He already had staff in all the early states; he already met with Reince Priebus. Knowing the Palin and Trump families have a special friendship, I watched. I was also waiting for signs of a possible Palin run. Having been politically involved for over seven years, I knew enough that I could tell whether she would run by watching all the candidates actions vs. hers.

With Sarah Palin back in 2008, I fell and I fell hard – on Day One. The vetting came after. I did not do this with Trump. I took a very cautious, reserved approach that spanned a complete year. I wrote long ago that the best vetting tool is often the ticking clock – simple passage of time. As time passes, a candidate’s strengths and weaknesses are revealed. Ultimately, the mask comes off revealing who they really are. But, it takes time for this to play out.

When Trump did not renew his contract for The Apprentice and started passing his businesses on to his children, I knew he was serious and girding for a run.

Cruz was first to announce his candidacy in April 2015. I liked his “Constitutional conservative” message, but was troubled by his lack of executive experience. Cruz is a first-term senator. He had not created one job, met a payroll, or created a business plan. A first-term senator with no executive experience. Didn’t we just do that? Twice? But, it was still very early. Trump was not yet a candidate. He was still in exploratory. And there was Palin.

When political professional Jeb Bush mistakenly said he was running, while he too was still in exploratory, and had to walk it back, I got a good guffaw. Political novice Trump did not make that mistake. That impressed me.

Exploratory Committee – Campaign Launch through Year End

On June 16, 1015, Donald Trump announced his candidacy. For me at that point, a Palin run was off the table and a dead issue. Trump has over 1,000 times her financial net worth, and I could not see her running against him and Cruz. Palin – who at best is worth $12 million – would have had to sell herself out to every PAC, major corporation, and lobbyist to run. It’s not an indictment of her. It’s just the nature of the beast. Time proved me correct on this.

I watched as Trump was lambasted as a “clown.” He was “not serious.” “It’s a publicity stunt.” That “clown” thingy didn’t last too long. Trump rapidly skyrocketed to the top of the polls – and stayed there. He won debate after debate. Trump was the only one who dared to suggest that we build a wall and stop Muslim immigration (even if only temporarily).

How I came to Support Donald Trump – Make America Great Again

After observing Trump’s exploratory committee and then his campaign for all of 2015, his executive experience, ability to maintain and sustain the lead, and coalition-building were the deciding factors in my decision to support his campaign personally as of December 19, 2015.

Trump is a Conservative

I studied Trump’s positions and compared them to the Three-Legged Stool. National Security: Peace Through Strength. Border security – building a wall, shutting down Muslim immigration. This one’s a no-brainer. One leg down, two to go….

Low taxes, free markets, limited government – Trump wants to simplify the tax code and reduce taxes for most tax payers – a position that mirrors – hmm….Reagan’s. The flat tax has long been a Republican primary staple, but it never goes anywhere. He wants to cut waste and eliminate entire agencies that serve no useful purpose. He wants to repeal and replace ObamaCare with market-based solutions and eliminate Common Core. Trump as as candidate has gotten the best results for the least amount of money. Knowing the games in CO and WY were set against him, Trump wisely did not spend a penny there. His success as a business man are rooted in conservative economic principles. You don’t build at $10 billion empire by squandering money or spending money you don’t have. Two legs down, one to go….

Those who revile Trump for evolving from pro-choice to pro-life seem to have conveniently forgotten that one of the most revered conservative icons – Ronald Reagan – was not only pro-choice at one time, but also a Democrat. Trump’s pro-life position mirrors Reagan’s “pro-life with three exceptions.” They also conveniently forget that the very woman at the center of Roe v. Wade – Norma McCorvey, who is fictitiously named Jane Roe – herself became pro-life and fights to over-turn the very case she won. Trump’s evolution to pro-life spanned more than a decade. His epic treatise on a culture of life is an absolute must-read. In it, he also writes about federalism and the Tenth Amendment – core conservative principles.

Similarly, those who doubt Trump’s sincerity on the Second Amendment point to his supporting an “assault weapons” ban – over 16 years ago. It was none other than conservative Reagan who was bamboozled into banning new machine gun sales to civilians via the Hughes Amendment. Trump has a concealed carry permit; his children are avid shooters. Over the nearly two decades that passed, Trump learned to value and appreciate our Second Amendment. He is an NRA Life Member and has spoken at their annual conferences. Trump is also a huge supporter of law enforcement and veterans.

Clearly, on the main social issues, Trump is conservative. His positions satisfy all three legs of the Three-Legged Stool. Trump does not chase after religious fanatics’ cause celebes; he does not grandstand on the Bible, like a certain other candidate, which perhaps causes some to doubt his conservatism. That is their problem. Trump is running for President, not Pope.

I’ve heard the whole story about donating to Democrats. Trump also donated to every Republican candidate that was in the 2016 field. His donations to Republicans far exceed those made to Democrats. Contrary to the lie spread by some, Trump did not change parties or miss elections. If you look at campaign finances of presidential candidates in a general election, it’s very common to see the same corporations donating to both Democrats and Republicans.

For me, the deciding factors to support Donald Trump were his executive experience, ability to maintain and sustain the lead, his courage to address the Muslim problem for what it is, coalition-building, exposing the underbelly of our corrupt political process, self-funding, and being a total outsider. In summary, he is the most conservative candidate who can win. On December 19, 2015, I walked into Trump Tower and bought two Make America Great hats – one in camo and the other in red and white.

Seeing all that has unfolded since, I am more than satisfied I did the right thing.

How I came to Support Donald Trump – Tying in the US for Palin Brand

Anyone who truly follows Sarah Palin closely saw the handwriting on the wall at least two months before the Trump endorsement. The Palin and Trump families had multiple meetings in New York during her Sweet Freedom media blitz. Willow Palin endorsed the Donald back in November. When she was asked about the candidates, Sarah Palin gushed very enthusiastically about Trump. Cruz elicited tepid responses from her indicative of “afterthought.”

I could not endorse or start supporting Trump under the US for Palin brand until the Palin endorsement came down. I had no special knowledge of it coming aside from what nearly eight years of hard experience taught me. I prepped my readers for the inevitable. When that day came, tying in the US for Palin brand took less than two hours.

US for Palin is proud to support Donald Trump in his goal to Make America Great Again.
