Talk of Christie’s impeachment is ridiculous

The media buzz about the possibility of Governor Chris Christie being impeached is nothing more than click bait.  It’s not going to happen. The people writing that it could or should happen either know it won’t happen, don’t know what they are talking about or are trying to ensure that Christie has no political future.

The buzz got started when both the prosecution and the defense attorneys in the Bridgegate trial claimed that Christie knew that the George Washington Bridge lane closures in September of 2013 were political retribution against Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich while the lanes were closed and not a part of a traffic study.  Christie has already been convicted of that in the court of public opinion.

If Donald Trump is elected President of the United States Christie is likely to resign the next day claiming that the job of leading Trump’s transition team is too important to the future of the country to be distracted by “chewing gum” which is how he characterized governing New Jersey while he was running for president himself.  He frequently said that he could “walk and chew gum” at the say time while running for president full time and governing New Jersey with his iPhone.  If Trump is elected, Christie resigns.  The impeachment question is mute and Kim Guadagno is sworn in as governor.

Regardless of who is elected President of the United States on November 8, the New Jersey gubernatorial race will escalate on November 9.

The Democrats are heavily favored to win the 2017 gubernatorial election thanks to the damage Christie has done to the New Jersey Republican Party. Removing Chris Christie from office would not help the Democratic nominee for governor.  It would help Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno who would then serve the remainder of Christie term while running for her own term.  Guadagno has a better chance of winning in 2017 and the New Jersey Republican Party has an easier job of rebuilding if Christie is gone.   That’s why Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto will not let impeachment proceedings occur in the lower house of the legislature.
