October 1962: The Beatles and their first recording in the UK!

(Before It's News)

We recall The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962.   As we know now, the US and the USSR came close to a nuclear war over Cuba that autumn!

Over in the UK, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and new drummer Ringo Starr released their first 45 rpm single.

According to songfacts, The Beatles made it to the studio in the summer/fall of 1962 and recorded “Love me do”:

“When this was released in England, it was not a big hit.

The Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, was so confident in the group that he gave the single a big marketing push by buying a bunch of copies of it (some say 10,000) for his record store, which helped get it on the charts and ensured more exposure for the band.”

It got to #17 in the UK…..not bad for a group’s first recording!

Two years later, it hit # 1 hit in the US when it was released as part of The Beatles’ pop chart avelanche of 1964.

The B-side was “P.S. I love you”, a much better in my opinion.    I’m really surprised that they didn’t promote this one rather than “Love me do”.

It is clearly a much better song!    They were included in the Beatles’ first UK album.   They were subsequently released in the 1964 US “The Early Beatles” album!

How do these Lennon-McCartney songs compare with others? My guess is that they were early signs of the duo’s songwriting talent.
