Berlin jihad attack: Popular Muslim Preacher arrested along with members of a Islamic terrorist recruiting network

NEOnline: German authorities have arrested five members of a terrorist recruiting network operating on behalf of the so-called Islamic State (IS), local media report.The arrests on Tuesday morning took place in the states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. The network recruited and provided logistical support for local volunteers making their way from Germany to Syria.

Among those arrested is an Iraqi citizen known as Abu Walaa, 32, or Ahmad Abdelaziz. The preacher is a leading figure of the Jihadi movement in Germany, and many of his followers have made their way to Syria. Walaa has been at the center of a year- long investigation, which also yielded arrests in the city of Hildesheim in July 2016.

The arrest appears to have been facilitated by a former IS fighter, Anil O., 22, who identified Walaa as Germany’s IS leader.

Ahmad Abdulaziz Abdullah A. (born in 1984 in Iraq), better known as Abu Walaa, is an Islamic preacher based in Hildesheim, Germany.

Born in Iraq, he immigrated to Germany in 2001. He preached at the Deutschsprachigen Islamkreises Hildesheim (DIK) mosque founded in 2012, and took part as a speaker in a great number of salafist events due to his popularity through his online video releases and his Facebook followers. He became known as a “preacher without face” (in German “Prediger ohne Gesicht”), because in many of his videos, his face would be hidden from the camera.^[1][2]

He is suspected of being the head of an Islamic group, recruiting young Muslims in Germany to fight for jihad in Syria and Iraq for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS). The German authorities had long been investigating his activities. Based on testimony by Turkish-German Anil O., a young man fighting in Syria and arrested upon his return to Germany, the German prosecutor’s office demanded Abu Walaa’s arrest after Anil O. admitted he was influenced by Abu Walaa at his Hildesheim mosque for jihad.

On the morning of November 8, 2016, the German police arrested Abu Walaa in Bad Salzdetfurth alongside four suspected accomplices in Hildesheim and North Rhine-Westphalia accused of supporting a foreign terrorist organization according to article 129b of the German Penal Code.^[2]
