Key Vote YES on Paul Amendment to the FY 2017 Budget Resolution

On behalf of FreedomWorks’ activist community, I urge you to contact your senators and urge them to vote YES on the amendment offered by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), S.Amdt.1, to the FY 2017 budget resolution, S.Con.Res 3. The amendment places a freeze on on-budget federal spending in FY 2018 through FY 2026 and brings the budget into balance by FY 2024.

While serving as the vehicle to begin the process of repealing ObamaCare, as currently written, S.Con.Res. 3 would increase budget deficits by $7.919 trillion between FY 2017 and FY 2026 and add nearly $9.01 trillion in publicly held debt. It’s beyond comprehension, after seeing more than $8.1 trillion added public’s share of the national debt since on President Barack Obama’s watch, why Congress would pass a budget resolution that doesn’t show any measure of fiscal restraint.

In May 2015, the 114th Congress passed the FY 2016 budget resolution, S.Con.Res. 11, which also served as the vehicle to repeal ObamaCare. S.Con.Res. 11 actually brought the budget into balance by FY 2023 and ran a surplus through FY 2025 and added $1.56 trillion to publicly held debt.

The Paul amendment to the FY 2017 budget resolution would freeze on-budget federal spending at the FY 2017 level, $3.265 trillion, between FY 2018 through FY 2026. The amendment would bring the budget into balance by FY 2024. The resolution does nothing to adversely affect ObamaCare repeal.

Please contact your representative and ask him or her to vote YES on the Paul amendment, S.Amdt.1, to the FY 2017 budget resolution, S.Con.Res 3. FreedomWorks will count this vote and any related procedural votes when calculating our Scorecard for 2017. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of the House and Senate who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.
