Senator Nelson Highlights Mars Goals Under Trump
Florida Senator Bill Nelson assured today that the current tense political atmosphere surrounding the U.S. and Russia’s supposed interference in the 2016 election will not impede NASA’s goal of putting a person on Mars. He explained that both countries are still working in tandem on the international space center, and he is hopeful that the incoming Trump administration will be committed to the cause.
While talking to reporters in Tallahassee, Nelson, the highest ranking Democrat on the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and a member of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1986, scolded reporters for not pressing for more information on the United States’ efforts to explore Mars and the space program.
He explained that it is his “interest to see that NASA doesn’t miss a beat,” and that the plan is still to get humans to Mars by the year 2033. In addition, there are also plans to have a rocket take U.S. astronauts to space in the next two years.
While on the campaign trail, President-elect Trump said he supported space exploration like a mission to Mars while noting that NASA was in need of reform. In a rally held in central Florida, Trump stated that “Under a Trump administration, Florida and America will lead the way into the stars.”
