Trump Warns Obama: No More Releases From Guantanamo

Leave it to Obama to make one last effort to threaten U.S. national security before leaving office by releasing more barbaric, dangerous terrorists from Guantanamo Bay. In his final days, it seems as though President Obama is on a quest to create as much destabilization and conflict as possible. Luckily, we are only 16 days away from a Donald Trump presidency, which will ensure that no more terrorists are released from detention.

On Tuesday, it was announced that President Obama will transfer 20 additional prisoners from the Guantanamo Bay military prison before leaving office.

However, Donald Trump urged Obama to not transfer any more detainees, and reiterated that he would continue to keep Guantanamo open as president.

“There should be no further releases from Gitmo. These are extremely dangerous people and should not be allowed back onto the battlefield.”

As President, Obama has continued his plan to remove detainees from the prison after promising to close the facility. However, Donald Trump has pledged to fill it up again, saying, “we’re gonna load it up with some bad dudes, believe me, we’re gonna load it up.”

Upon taking office, there were 242 detainees at Guantanamo. Following the last release, there will be roughly 40 inmates left when Obama leaves office.

According to data released by the Director of National Intelligence, 30 percent of detainees who were transferred have rejoined terrorist activities or are suspected of doing so.

The released detainees will be shipped overseas, as federal law prohibits any detainees being brought to the U.S.

President Obama is expected to transfer additional detainees from the Guantanamo Bay military prison in his final days in office, despite objections from President-elect Donald Trump.

“I would expect, at this point, additional transfers to be announced,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters on Tuesday, CNN reported, after Trump warned against further releases of “extremely dangerous” remaining detainees at the Guantanamo Naval Base, Cuba.

The New York Times reported last month that the Obama administration intends to transfer 17 or 18 detainees before the president leaves office, leaving 41 or 42 prisoners remaining at the military prison. The last detainee transfer was announced by the Defense Department at the start of December, meaning that 59 prisoners currently remain at Guantanamo Bay.

Obama has accelerated his push to close Guantanamo over the last year, transferring numerous prisoners to foreign countries and delivering a plan to Congress that would involve moving detainees not cleared for release to stateside prisons. However, lawmakers have maintained restrictions on moving Guantanamo detainees to the United States, preventing the president from fulfilling his campaign promise of closing the facility.
