Trump at the sheriff’s association breakfast today:
Eavenson: “There’s a state senator in Texas that was talking about legislation to require conviction before we could receive that forfeiture money.”
Trump: “Do you believe that?”
Eavenson: “And I told him that the cartel would build a monument to him in Mexico if he could get that legislation passed.”
Trump: “Who is that state senator? I want to hear his name. We’ll destroy his career…”
The sheriff declined to identify the TX senator, saying “I’m not into character assassination & the president was just agreeing with us. I can tell you he’s definitely on our side. ”
The thing is, I don’t think Trump was joking. I believe Trump has such natural tyrannical inclinations that he was entirely serious when he said will destroy his career.
On top of that, my opinion asset forfeiture would dictate that property can be seized, but it cannot be given to the agencies that seized it until a conviction is complete. It should be unconstitutional for any agency of any level of government to seize personal property and dispose of it without a conviction.
