President Donald Trump’s first speech to the joint session of Congress was widely cheered by conservatives – but much more shockingly, by even one of Far Left’s most far left.
Van Jones, former green czar under former Barack Obama’s administration, and a long-time critic of Trump, as well as pretty much all things conservative, had high praise for the president.
He said this, of Trump’s tribute to Navy SEAL Ryan Owens, who died during a raid in Yemen: “[It was] one of the most extraordinary moments you have ever seen in American politics, period.”
But he wasn’t yet finished.
Jones also described the tribute as the moment Trump “became president of the United States,” and that it’s just the kind of speech that could lead to a second term.
Trump’s remarks on Owens brought out the mass applause.
He said her husband’s legacy was “etched into eternity,” and that “Ryan died as he lived, a warrior and a hero.”
Cameras flashing to Owens’ widow, Carryn, caught her with tears streaming down her face as Trump daughter, Ivanka, seated to her immediate left, looked on with a kind expression and applauded.
The remarks from Trump resulted in a standing ovation for Carryn, and for the memory of her husband, Ryan.
Jones, on CNN after the speech, said this:
“There are a lot of people who have a lot of reason to be frustrated with [Trump], to be fearful of him. But that was one of the most extraordinary moments you have ever seen in American politics, period. And he did something extraordinary.
“And for people who have been hoping that he would become unifying, hoping that he might find some way to become presidential, they should be happy with that moment. For people who have been hoping that maybe he would remain a divisive cartoon, which he often finds a way to do, they should begin to become a little bit worried tonight, because that thing you just saw him do, if he finds a way to do that over and over again, he’s going to be there for eight years,” Jones continued.
“Now, there was a lot that he said in that speech that was counterfactual, that was not right, that I oppose and will oppose. But he did something tonight that you cannot take away from him. He became president of the United States,” he finished.
