The Real Controversy Over The Democrats Gold Star Widow Ovation Controversy

Politifact has given the claim that Congressional Democrats refused to stand for Gold Star widow during President Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress a big fat “false.”

Conservative bloggers really did themselves a disservice by reporting that Democrats did not stand to acknowledge the wife of killed Navy SEAL William “Ryan” Owens during the address.

All they had to do was watch the video of the speech.

Like Politifact reported, Democrats did stand, just not for that long.

But there lies the real problem.

Democrats were hell bent in showing their disapproval of President Trump by protesting him in any way imaginable.

We get it. Wear whatever you want, make a face, or don’t, to show opposition to Trump, but to protest him by cutting an applause short for a fallen U.S. Service member is pretty darn pathetic.

Politifact posted this excuse for why Democrats decided to sit down while Republicans stayed standing in applause for the fallen hero’s widow.

Democrats weren’t too thrilled with Trump’s speech, to be sure. But upon reviewing recordings of the speech, there’s ample evidence that Democrats did stand — just not as long as their Republican counterparts. And that’s a fairly typical thing for the opposition party to do, an expert told us.

Even Senator Marco Rubio (R) took issue with his Democratic colleagues sitting down prematurely during the standing ovation.

“I don’t mean this about everybody, I’m sure there were a few standing and clapping and they clapped earlier. But it was a stunning moment…

“We were standing up in that minute and a half ovation for the widow of that Navy SEAL. I turn back around my shoulder and I see half the room, most of them, sitting down. I was just shocked by that. I noticed as soon as the speech was done they got up and walked out. So, look, they have a right to do all of that and that’s fine. But, at the end of the day, last night’s speech was presidential. And I don’t think anyone can dispute that. You don’t have to agree with everything. …”-Senator Marco Rubio on Fox & Friends

Again, Democrats refused to stand throughout the entire standing ovation.

The acknowledgment of the Gold Star wife was not a partisan issue, rather a expression of support for all of our fallen U.S. Service members that have served to protect our freedoms from foreign and domestic aggression.

They fought to protect the right for those Democratic members of Congress who choose to sit before the ovation was over.
