Two Muslims arrested by armed police have been charged with multiple terrorism offences. Ummariyat Mirza and Zainub Mirza are set to appear in court on Thursday after being arrested by officers from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit. The pre-planned operation also saw police search five homes and a business address in Birmingham.

21 year old Muslim Ummariyat Mirza was arrested in Birmingham, UK – only a week after the deadly Westminster attack.

Ummariyat Mirza, from St Agathas Road in Birmingham, is charged with three offences including possessing documents containing information likely to be used in preparing for an act of terrorism.

The 21-year-old is also charged with conducting research and purchasing a knife and other items which would assist him to carry out an attack in the UK.

Zainub Mirza, from Eastfield Road in Bordesley Green, is charged with five offences including sending links to videos of beheadings and ISIS propaganda as well as an image of a man holding two severed heads.

He is accused of buying a blade and conducting research to carry out a deadly assault. West Midlands Police have also charged Mirza with possessing the bomb-making guide the Anarchist Cookbook and an extremist document called the Mujahideen Poisons handbook.

The arrests, made on March 29, were said not to be linked to the Westminster attack last month, in which four people died after a terrorist drove his car into crowds and fatally knifed a police officer.

Five homes and one business address were searched by counter-terrorism officers as part of the investigation, police said.

The pair will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
