Basic Rifle Course at the New Training Center in Murphy

A basic rifle course will be offered at the new training center (TEB) in Murphy, NC on June 24th and 25th. The class will start at 9:00 AM on Saturday, June 24th. Be prepared to be there at 8:30 AM for rifle check, release signoff and range rules review. Requirements are listed below. The cost of the class is $100 and must be deposited by June 16th. The class will be limited to 10 students. Instructors are certified NRA rifle instructors and a range safety officer will be present on the range.

Basic Rifle Course Items to bring to Basic Rifle Course

Minimum Required Items:

AR-15 Rifle with adjustable sling
250 rounds 5.56/223 55 gr (No Green Tip). Reloads are not recommended.
6 empty 30 round AR magazines
Chest rig (see below)
Hearing protection
Eye protection
Paper/pen/pencil
Ceaning supplies: solvent, lubricants, cotton patches, cleaning rod/tips.
Extra set of batteries for optics
Water
Lunch for both days

Optional Items (Not Required for the Basic Course)

Rain gear
Shooting mat or ground cloth
Knee and elbow pads 
HatIf running optics, know the zero adjustment settings for your particular optics prior to the class
Hydration pouch (camel back)or canteen
Leatherman type tool
First aid kit (IFAK)
Bug spray
Mechanix gloves/shooting gloves
Sturdy boots (military field or hiking)
I recommend long sleeves shirts and sturdy pants

Some Gear Recommendations based on previous experience and those of previous classes. I would not go out a spend a small fortune on gear until you have completed the Basic Course. There you will begin to see what works and what doesn’t.

You will need either a chest rig, battle belt or plate carrier.

Plate carriers offer the option of running with Ballistic Plates or not. They can be very hot and uncomfortable. Chest rigs come in many forms.They are the most versatile but, like plate carriers have limited space for pouches and gear and can be hard to access when in the prone. They are great for vehicle operations. Battle belts offer the most real estate, have a low center of gravity, work well in any position and can be worn with either of the above or a ruck sack. Battle belts are horrible for vehicle operations. Battle belts require suspenders and an additional internal belt to function. DO NOT BUY A CHEST RIG WITH THE RIFLE AND PISTOL POUCHES PERMANENTLY SEWN IN. The pouches are usually sewn in the incorrect positions and are worthless to a right handed shooter.

You can buy very inexpensive military surplus chest rigs known as a FLC (Fighting Load Carrier) from Grouches in Waynesville or High Ground Military Surplus (half way between Dillsboro and Franklin on 441). They can provide ammo pouches also. Some additional thoughts: Do not buy anything in the color black. I would order everything either in camouflage, O.D. green or tan (coyote)with coyote reserved for winter use. Stay away from ACU. Multi-cam is great, but expensive due to the patents. We mostly use multi-cam in our group for recognition. The better hunters camo outfits such as Real Tree are excellent and is some cases better than military.

Practice training dummy ammunition.

The below listed are preferable to snap caps due to the high cost of quality snap caps such as A-Zoom. They must be purchased in a minimum of 50, so you might want to make it a group purchase. DO NOT PURCHASE THE 100% PLASTIC DUMMY ROUND. They will not stand up to the training requirements and will cause all sorts of problems. I recommend 10 per person for this type of round.
