Remembering Jacques Cousteau

In my years growing up my parents liked things to be real quiet around the house on Sunday afternoons. It was their day of rest. There was to be no backyard wrestling or treehouse expansion projects or the building of fortresses or go-carts. Those are all Saturday projects. Mid-Sunday afternoon was to be peaceful and quiet.

On Sunday afternoons after Tarzan was over, the Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau came on. It held me spellbound. Living in Florida fueled my fascination with the Ocean and Jacques Cousteau inspired me to become a Scuba Diver so I could get out there and see it. My Mother purchased the entire 23 volume Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau Encyclopedia Set, all of which I read from cover to cover several times. I was completely familiar with all of the sea life I encountered years later when I actually got out in the ocean as a Diver. It was all because of the National Geographic Society and Jacques Cousteau.

So I read that on this day in 1997 that Captain Cousteau passed away. His body of work continues to outlive him. I thank him for giving me some fascinating Sunday afternoons and the inspiration to go see God’s Creation in the deep for myself.
