Key Votes on Amendments in the Senate to the National Defense Authorization Act, H.R. 2810

On behalf of FreedomWorks’ activist community, I urge you to contact your senators and urge them to vote on amendments offered in the Senate to the National Defense Authorization Act, H.R. 2810, in the manner prescribed on each amendment below. As is always the case, FreedomWorks reserves the right to key vote any amendment brought to the floor for a vote.

NO – S.Amdt.456: Sponsored by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), this amendment would eliminate future enforcement for defense and non-defense discretionary spending caps under the Budget Control Act, which has been amended by Congress since its passage in 2011. Given recent reports in the past year of waste in defense spending and unaccounted for funds, as well as the lack of a coherent strategy, Congress must get a full grasp of the waste in defense spending before it can justify more spending.

YES – S.Amdt.467: Sponsored by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), this amendment would clarify current statute to prohibit the indefinite detention of American citizens without formal charges or a trial.

YES – S. Amdt.498: Sponsored by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), this amendment would authorize a new round of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), aligning the Department of Defense’s bases with our strategy and putting the savings to better uses. A 2013 report by the conservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI) estimated that the first four rounds of BRAC save approximately $8 billion annually. The 2005 BRAC is saving nearly $4 billion annually.

YES – S.Amdt.681: Sponsored by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), this amendment would require a report on the audit of the Pentagon’s financial statements. The report to Congress would be required within 90 days of the enactment of H.R. 2810.

FreedomWorks will count the vote on these amendments in the Senate to the National Defense Authorization Act, H.R. 2810, on our 2017 Congressional Scorecard. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of the House and Senate who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.
